| The grocery business is one of the most competitive industries out there. The Council of Economic Advisors must not have any familiarity with the term "Loss Leaders." |

Labor costs and trucking cost drive a lot of food pricing.
Right across the Bay Bridge poultry workers worked for $15/hour in the chicken processing plants on the eastern shore prior to Covid. Due to inflation the chicken processing plants now are paying $18 - $21 per hour to process the chicken that you eat. Fuel costs, i.e. trucking costs are also a big component of food pricing. |
| This is not news. Corporate profits have been at record highs for a long time. |
| Eggs and milk are cheaper at Costco than they were in 2021. Just noticed this the other day as it seems eggs and milk n regular grocery stores has gone up again, |
|
Does OP want "socialism" where the president sets food prices?
If not, then the ire is directed at the companies raking in record profits under the banner of "inflation" |
|
Prices rise as SNAP benefits increase. Government spending is fueling the inflation.
|
So you’re blaming poor people now for high food prices? Spoken like a true a Republican. |
It's easy to have record profits when you have significant inflation. Like how my house is worth 20% more than two years ago. Record value! But in reality the buying power is diminished. The WH is downplaying the real inflation in food, which has definitely been more than 20% across the board. Many staples I buy are easily 40 to 50% more. It's going from $3 to $5. Or $6 to $9. Or quantity reduced from 16 oz to 14.5 oz. Not everything has gone up but enough have. And supermarkets also have noticeably fewer workers now. |
No same reason college costs soared when the government directly entered the student loan market. |
Because they’ve automated processes like checkouts, duh. And workers can get better paying jobs elsewhere. Are you denying that corporate profits are at record highs? |
Spoken like a true Democrat...... |
That's not how economics work. |
| What actual power does the potus have to change the prices of milk, food or anything else? Does the potus get to tell farmers and Exxon what to charge? |
Better paying jobs? Everything is being automated (legal work, medicine, journalism — nothing is immune), and the tech workers who develop and maintain the automation are being laid off. |
