Blow out question/hair in general question

Anonymous
I have such weird hair and it’s only becoming weirder as I age. It’s kinda curly/wavy but not in a pretty way. I have tried all the curly hair recommendations/methods-my hair doesn’t respond well to literally anything. When it’s in its natural form I feel like it looks so bad.

To make matters worse-I suck at styling it. Like I can use a straightener but it still doesn’t look great. And a curling iron-even the “automatic” ones seems to have only a very temporary effect. Like in an hour it’s pretty much back to normal. And that’s with using plenty of product to try and get it to stay.

I’m so frustrated. I’m thinking of 1. Doing keratin. I did this several years ago and it lasted a few months so I felt it was worth it. It’s just the idea of having to do this forever that annoys me.
2. Getting one of those blowout subscriptions. When I do get a blowout-it looks fantastic and lasts numerous days. I can never make my hair look that good no matter how many tutorials I watch. I do however wish the subscriptions in this area were more than 2x a month. Obviously I know I can get additional but then it takes the value away somewhat. Someone mentioned in a couple of threads that they go to a place that has a subscription for unlimited blowouts. Is that in the Dc area? And how much is that? I live in the Bethesda area and only see two salons within 30 miles that offer a blowout subscription but it’s maximum 2 per month (and then you get a small discount if you do additional).

Ok. I have similar hair, and went curly ish for a few years during the pandemic (after flat ironing my hair for years). I would shower at night and let it air dry then sleep on it. I like it fine but not great, and it's highly variable.

Then! I got my hair cut at a salon in Miami while on vacation, and the stylist gave me a modified blow out and it looked SO GOOD. Had wave, bend, body, but smooth. And he suggested I go back to blow drying, but not flat ironing.

In a moment of financial weakness, I bought the Dyson hairdryer. And it has changed my life. It's fast, smooth, works well on lower temperatures, and is easy to style without flattening out all the body. My hair has never looked so good, my cuts last longer, etc. I keep it wavy on vacation, but generally blow dry after washing otherwise.

So my rec before you do something more permanent is to try a fancy hair dryer. I didn't think it would make a difference, but it sure did.

Have you tried the famous Revlon drier brush thing?

Op here. Yup I have and it made my hair frizzy and caused a bunch of breakage. I swear nothing that works for others works for me. It sucks.

Thanks. Maybe this is worth a try. I mean I’m assuming since it’s pricey that if it doesn’t work for me I can return it so nothing to lose and would be so great if something that simple actually made improvements!

It makes my hair frizzy too. I wait until it's close to dry, dry on sections, and then make sure to use the cool function. That brings back the shine.

NP. My hair was straight, shiny and easy to manage until peri. Now it’s very wavy—about 2b—and, like yours OP, not in a good way. Like PP I bought the Dyson hair dryer. It’s done virtually nothing for me. If anything, it takes my hair longer to dry and it is even frizzier. Look into the Dyson air wrap thing as well as the hairdryer. I wish I had the air wrap thing instead.

You can make an appointment to try it at the Dyson store to see how it will work on your hair.

Get a dyson airwrap. It is amazing. It has replaced my bi-weekly blowouts. Now Inonly go to my hair stylists 2-3x a month for special events. The rest I can do myself.

I got a pixie. It looks a lot better than my thin, frizzy, wavy bob. I’ve had one before, so I knew it would suit me. I feel so much better.

You really got a pixie cut and you live in DC? Or is this the midwestern mom?

I never ever see those on anyone under 70 in DC/Northern VA. It's all about long hair.

I wonder if it may be worth it to explore a keratin treatment?

I have an unlimited one in Chicago that’s $175 a mo. It’s 100% worth it (I have similar hair and am so bad at doing it hate it). Instead I go straight from the gym, work for 50min while someone else does my hair, and get ~5 days out of it looking good (2 or 3 down then pulled back into a nice looking pony). I probably average 5 times a month

Looking at the dc dry bar subscription, it looks like it’d work out to roughly that if you get the 2x a month and budget in your head for 3 additional ones at the $14 off price. I get that full subscriptions are nice bc you don’t think about the incremental cost of each one when you decide to go again

Now that most places are doing the non formaldehyde version they really don’t last long. It’s like 6 weeks for me, which I can’t justify the $$$ for. You can try it but it’s a lot of chemicals and a lot of money.

I am on a similar quest and having some success with k18 and the colored hair line from Oribe(also expensive, but lasts a long time for me).

The revlon dryer fries my hair too. I am mostly air drying and then using a straightener and it’s ok, not amazing. I can’t bring myself to try the more expensive versions.
