Idea for lack of ticket reciprocity between DC, MD, and VA

Anonymous
If MD and VA won't acknowledge DC camera tickets, why doesn't DC just "debit" any tickets received by DC residents in VA or MD against their respective states' balances with the DC government?

For example, I am a DC resident and I get a $40 parking ticket in VA. I should be able to take my ticket to the DC government and they will reduce the amount owed by VA residents in unpaid tickets to DC. Further, DC will not add any points to my driving record that VA and MD try to add until such time VA and MD residents' balances are paid in full (or reciprocity is agreed between the three jurisdictions).

Can the state of VA or MD try to place a collections notice on an out-of-state individual for an unpaid ticket?

Why isn't DC fighting fire with fire on this issue? Let us offset any tickets incurred in VA or MD!

No one can try to place a collections notice on a traffic violation. You can only send debts that arise out of a written contract to collections.

Congress would never approve the plan you suggest, anyway.

What is there for Congress to approve? Pretty sure this can be done through administrative powers of the Mayor.

They should be collecting on tickets. Period.

How will it cost taxpayers money?

Today the DC Council debates and votes on the new crime bill, in response to the murder and carjacking crisis expanding each day in DC.

- and you want to discuss parking tickets? Seriously??

I think the naysayers live in MD or VA.

I like the idea OP. It's abhorrent that we have a system that lets fragrantly awful drivers accrue thousands in tickets without repercussion.

They're talking about SPEEDING tickets and Red light tickets. You sound ignorant to the issue where cars rack up thousands through blatantly illegal driving that endangers DC residents.

Both are important. Also, some of the folks racking up thousands in tickets are criminals in VA/MD who commit crimes in DC, so it's really just another angle to addressing problems in our city.

LOL.
DC doesn’t even enforce traffic violations on its own citizens. They don’t have the bandwidth to do what OP is suggesting.

Know what else endangers DC residents? Murders. And carjacking. And illegal motorcycles and quads.

But sure, let’s discuss tickets and bike lanes and stuff.

don't ride a bike, but really sick of the sh*t driving in DC that goes without any repercussion. And yes, often enough those people with sh*t driving are criminals anyways.

Not sure why you propose being soft on crime, but I support holding murders and carjackers accountable along with everyone else who breaks the law, including the sh*tty drivers I encounter every d*mn day commuting through this city. If DC MPD are not bothering to actually pull people over, this is the other way to nab them.
