School Board Forum on "Boundary and Capacity"

Anonymous
For those interested in what the new School Board might do with school boundaries, mark your calendars - they've got a work session on "Boundary and Capacity" scheduled for February 13th from 12:30-1:30 as part of a work session on the budget.

Meeting leaders are Ricardy Anderson and Kyle McDaniel. Don't be surprised if, after waiting until after their own schools got big additions or expansions (Anderson's district includes Falls Church and Justice, and McDaniel lives in the Oakton district), they'll start pushing to redistrict kids out of other schools, citing budgetary constraints.

Interesting. What about western high school? The voice of our community is getting so marginalized. It’s really disappointing.

Will the Langley bastion finally fall? I hope so. Rooting for this board.

You mean the “western high school”?

In the end, nothing major will change.

Yes, Western HS (or whatever they will call it) that was slated to help with overcrowding at Westfield, Chantilly and South Lakes — all the kids going to Carson split up and go to overcrowded high schools and the school board is marginalizing and ignoring our community. We’ve been promised a high school for years. Will the school board ever get it together and make a decision? In action is injustice.

Honestly, do some of you actually think a "western high school" is going to be built? Seriously?? The only reason it's ever included in budget discussions is to appease parents. They have no intention of ever building it.

The fact that they include it in the CIP year after year while making no progress to build it and doing so many other things along the way to render it unnecessary tells you how little they care about any real transparency or accountability.

+1
Like the way they administer surveys, but then go ahead and do exactly what they had planned to do anyway - regardless of the survey results.

NP. I think they intended to build it. But the population of the county has changed significantly and projections are for Fairfax County to continue to shrink.

The western high school is not going to happen any time soon.

The forum isn’t streamed so you will have to go to gatehouse if you want to watch it.

Please fix the school boundaries in and around 20171. Thank you.

What’s broken? There are other zip codes where kids go to multiple schools.

As of December enrollment is up 920 since the start of the SY.

That is division-wide. Overall, enrollment is still down about 8000 kids from pre-Covid, the county’s population is declining, and birth rates are down nationally.

There may be pockets in Fairfax where they need to add capacity, but with all the expansions of high schools in western Fairfax the need for a new western high school has largely dissipated.
