Location of DCUM posters?

Anonymous
I know there are separate forums for other cities, but I have a feeling that a large percentage of posts to the local forums are from people who do not live in the DC metropolitan area. Sometimes I feel that the person making the post is clueless about what is happening here. Is there a way to get a reliable statistic on this?

We don't have a way to provide statistics for a single forum. Only for the entire site.

Let me guess: you think anyone who disagrees with you must not live in the DC area? I've gotten that attitude before even though I'm a lifelong resident here.

NP. I know what OP is talking about and it feels like it’s happening on the school forums, too.

I've been on the FCPS forum and run across a lot of posters who seem to feel that if you disagree with them, you must be a "troll" and/or from elsewhere. No, there are simply lots of people with different opinions outside of the echo chamber in which many of you live.

No. I understand what you are saying- this is not simply because of someone having a different opinion.

WTH. IYKYK? What is setting off your spidey senses that someone is not in the DC area and posting? Do they sound not knowledgeable or do they just stir things up?

Can you give an example? I just assume that people have very different experiences when living in this area, but maybe I just haven't come across these posts.

DP but yes and yes.

There are some idiot locals too but the external agitators are pretty easy to spot.

Google Analytics changed and it is not as easy to get useful geographic statistics. Moreover, mobile users often show up at a central location where the mobile network connects to the Internet (and mobile users are over half of our users). Due to this point, Virginia is the state with the largest number of users but that probably includes lots of mobile users from DC and MD. So, include DC, VA, and MD as the top region. The next largest numbers of users by state come from New York and California. Those are followed by Florida, Georgia, Texas, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

This is considering all users over the last 28 days. What would be more interesting though I don't have good data about it now, is the origin of frequent users as opposed to those who follow a search query, read a few pages, and disappear.

Thanks! I wonder how many out-of-state users started as DMV users.

I also wonder what data the ad people have - average HHI of users by zip codes, just their tracked web behavior, something else?

Many of the out-of-the-area posters used to live in the area. Or, they learned about DCUM from someone who either lives here now or used to. Others find us via search engines.

Ad companies have a lot of info but a lot of it is anonymized. Facebook is a lot more invasive because they match info captured on Facebook with information obtained from data brokers.
