do you always take the AP exam in the AP class you are taking

Anonymous
Just curious. Thinking about saving money.
If the test doesn't actually count for anything is it worth it?
I noticed AP Language & Comp doesn't have an equivalent course at UMD. Therefore, they will give you credit for a good score, but it won't actually count for a particular course?[mastodon]

Beginning this year, MCPS is paying the AP exam fees for students in the corresponding AP courses.

You don't report the bad score. But at least your kid got better content by taking an AP level.

Starting this year, since its paid for by the county, MCPS pushes every kid who takes an AP class to take the AP exam. No idea what happens if your kid resists or declines.

I don't think the pushing is an MCPS thing. DCs teachers did not encourage or discourage either way.

MCPs cares about image. Blah blah % of our students took the AP exam, blah blah % passed with a 4 or 5.

I don’t believe anything happens. They would obviously like students to take advantage and do well, but if you don’t take the exam there is no penalty. You do have to have signed up by the initial deadline (not registered late).

You think it'll get cut from next year's budget?

It has not been cut from next year's budget:

"In
FY 2025, OCIP will continue to expand access to college
opportunities in partnership with Montgomery College.
In alignment with the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future,
Advanced Placement exams, International Baccalaureate
exams, and dual enrollment opportunities will continue
to be provided at no cost to students"

It was done for equity reasons, and it makes sense. It won't be cut from the budget.

Your child is better off taking the exam, regardless of whether they pass. They are more likely to try in the class, and the exam is good exposure to college exams. Kids almost always do better in a subsequent exam.

Most colleges are requiring freshman writing, even with a passing AP Lang score, and that is a good thing. The standards have eroded and I think there are few kids, even among those who score a 5 in Lang, who wouldn't benefit from more writing instruction in college. A high score on the Lang exam might place your child into an honors section of writing in college, though.
