First kid in APS. I know Algebra Intensified taking in 7th is a HS credit. My kid got B+ in first and second quarter. He didn't the teacher this year but doesn't have problem working the hw/ assignments alone or with little help. He caught off guard in the first quarter so he got 89% then he didn't do well in one of the test in second quarter which brought his whole grade down, now he's again got 89% which is B+. I don't think he's struggling per say, once the concepts are explained, he's able to understand it and work through the Delta Math, IXL or whatever hw by himeself.
That said, he's hoping to get an A the next 2 quarters, assuming he gets them, what would his final grade be? and do most people choose to keep the grade? or have them retake the class in HS? I'm at a total lost as none of us went to the school system here and he is our first born so not sure what to do. I'm assuming he will be taking Geometry Intensified next year. |
Both my kids with As--repeated Intensified Algebra 1 in 8th. Best thing ever.
Firstborn had an absolutely horrendous math teacher in 6th/7th AP MS. He went to take a private HS Algebra exemption test right after 7th grade and got a 58%. This was with As the entire way through the course and a 600 SOL. They both went to private HS and started in Honors Geo there. They are very solid in math now. They younger one Sophomore--was bumped up into Calc this semester. I have talked to so many parents where kids had the same thing ----strong foundation was not gained in APS MS math. |
The transcript grade is an average of the 4 quarters. APS only shows the final grade on the transcript. You can expunge the grade from the transcript if you want, you don't need to retake the class. However, if you are planning to do that, check with the HS counselor early. I know there was a MS grade my kid wanted to take off but didn't say that until junior year and by then it was too late because they would have had to take an SOL in a different HS class in that subject to get the right number of "verified" credits. I don't know if that was a math class or the 8th grade geography. But, something to be aware of. |
I would not bother expunging an A- or B+ in algebra one in seventh grade. If your child expunges the grade, college admissions officers will have no idea what they got. And they may assume a C. An a minus or b plus is not bad. And kid can still get into an ivy with that in seventh grade. I’ve seen it happen twice. |
Thank you! I’m not sure if she’s aiming for Ivy League but certainly wouldn’t want a B+/ A- be the cause of rejection for colleges. Since the school doesn’t have A- so I’m assuming she would likely end with B+ |
You can expunge the grade without retaking the class. I don't think your kid with a B+ needs to retake the class.
I haven't heard of retaking the class personally. Probably should have looked into it though for my kid who took Algebra the pandemic year. |
