White, not from this area (overseas), has an interesting life story (but not one of hardship - just always the American in local schools), perfect grades, hardest course work.
Kid got a 1350 equivalent on the PSAT which I believe will go up because the lowest scores was in the math. |
| oh, and has done ECs but not really had leadership positions or consistency |
|
Sorry, i am new at this.
Kid is Interested in humanities, great writer, quiet kid. i could see them in a smaller (or at least not huge) school. not a big city environment ideally. very mature and independent. NOt a joiner nor an extrovert and a party scene wouldn't be the thing |
humanities or psych, for example. but not a hard science or engineering nor traditional STEM |

Budget?
|
|
Colgate University
Haverford College University of Richmond Davidson College William & Mary |
thank you. We arent ruling anything out based on budget - yet. But I can't see paying $$$ for a school that is in a different league than a highly-ranked state school (Virginia in our case, and kid will apply to at least a couple of those). |

Might find a lot of kindred spirits at St Olaf, which would probably give him decent merit $.
William and Mary a good suggestion.Haverford might be as well. Doesn’t sound like a Colgate kid based on description. Kenyon? |

Thanks for the suggestions so far!
He visited W&M and didn't like it. I think the people seemed boring? Provincial? I can't remember the criticism, it c ould have just been that the colonial wiliamsburg was too kitshy which I dn't think matters that much once you are going to the school Not a "woke" person... (parents may be described this way) but def cosmopolitan and aware polticially |
this list doesn't make sense to me at all. I have a "work hard, party hard" kind of son and Colgate, Richmond, Davidson are some of his top picks. |
If he got a 1350 on PSAT he may very well have more than “okay” scores once he studies and takes the SAT. |
| Hire a consultant to groom him a bit with great ECs and summer stuff so his resume is s more filled out. |
| Haverford likely out of reach unless scores go up by quite a bit… |
| He’s cosmopolitan and found W&M too provincial/boring but doesn’t want a big city? I’m pretty stumped on this one! |

I am the poster who seconded Haverford, in part bc I thought, “if this kid were a girl, I’d recommend Bryn Mawr in a heartbeat!” I suspect with straight As and an interesting story, Haverford could be in reach — especially for a boy, and as PP pointed out, scores might well go up.
I do suggest a visit to Northfield, MN, bc both Carleton and St. Olaf could be a fit. Maybe hit Grinnell on the same trip? OP, is it true that ECs aren’t emphasized in the same way in other countries? If so, colleges will know that and the limited ECs won’t matter as much. |
