Hello All,
My DC is in 5th grade .I just observed that my kids report card have mentioned above grade level math content - “Y”. I checked previous year (4th grade ) in which it have been mentioned- N . Is it common for all 5 th grade or does it mean Advance Math ? |
It's not common. Does he go to a different classroom for math? |
Not different room but DC in level -3 AAP not sure if that makes any difference |
If your DC is in advanced math, one of the parents had to have approved placement in advanced math at the beginning of the year. Maybe you gave approval thinking it was for something else, or maybe the other parent gave the approval?
Your child’s teacher should be able to explain. |
AAP is above grade level. That's what you signed up for. |
I know AAP is above grade level . I'm trying to understand whether it's Advance Math or AAP math |
That typically means AAP math. Are they going into AAP classroom for math? |
In AAP pull outs ,so far they have discussions on general topics and not Math .Thats what I'm confused why it's been mentioned advance .My DC does general math in the classroom. |
Email the school AART and ask. If DC is identified on report card as advanced for math, maybe someone dropped the ball and they should be going into AAP classroom for math. |
Does any of your kids who are in level III have the advance grade level mentioned yes in their report cards?. |
There is a separate class for Advanced Math in 5th grade because the kids in that class are learning 6th grade math. Kids who are on grade level are in one class. Kids who are in Advanced Math are in another class. LIII Pull outs are not math specific. |
Advanced math is different from level III |
Our AART told us that the above grade -level report card notation was used exclusively for AAP IV. As another poster said, however, advanced math in 5th is different from AAP. You would have had to sign something to approve that. |
Thank you !. This was the exact info that I was looking for . Still curious about the advance grade level content mentioned Y. Is anyone having info regarding it ? |
The math curriculum is the same in Advanced Math and the LIV classroom. Some schools have Advanced Math classes, some schools send kids to the LIV or LLIV class for just math. If the OPs kid is checked off as being above grade level in 5th grade then they are most likely doing grade 6 math. The only way to be sure is to ask the Teacher. Parents are supposed to sign off on a child being in Advanced Math or moved to the LIV class for math but I know plenty of parents who are surprised to find out their kid is in Advanced Math. I had one friend who said that they had chosen to defer LIV and the like and the Teachers sent her kid to the Advanced Math class because the kid was bored in the regular class. The Teachers waited a few weeks, called my friend in for a conference, and said that the kid was engaged and less distracted in the Advanced Math class. I have a few friends who ended up forgetting they signed the paper work. |
