Our AART told us that the above grade -level report card notation was used exclusively for AAP IV. As another poster said, however, advanced math in 5th is different from AAP. You would have had to sign something to approve that.
The math curriculum is the same in Advanced Math and the LIV classroom. Some schools have Advanced Math classes, some schools send kids to the LIV or LLIV class for just math. If the OPs kid is checked off as being above grade level in 5th grade then they are most likely doing grade 6 math. The only way to be sure is to ask the Teacher. Parents are supposed to sign off on a child being in Advanced Math or moved to the LIV class for math but I know plenty of parents who are surprised to find out their kid is in Advanced Math. I had one friend who said that they had chosen to defer LIV and the like and the Teachers sent her kid to the Advanced Math class because the kid was bored in the regular class. The Teachers waited a few weeks, called my friend in for a conference, and said that the kid was engaged and less distracted in the Advanced Math class. I have a few friends who ended up forgetting they signed the paper work.
