During HS Swim Season Why Do Some Meets Schedule 13 & O last?

Anonymous
This weekend many HS swimmers have to choose between their HS meet and the PVS meet. Knowing the potential conflicts, why not put the 13 & older kids earlier in the day? Are they intentionally try to discourage HS swimming?

The schedule for PVS open meets never really changes much. Normally the HS meets would be on Friday night, and the Jan open is the one open with no Friday night session. If a kid finished swimming at 10:30pm on Friday, they'd be really grateful for that 2:30 pm start time the next day.

It's just that for some unknown reason, more of the HS meets have been on Sat this year. It's not typical!

Our HS (MCPS) meet is on Saturday morning so having the PVS meet in the morning wouldn't necessarily eliminate conflicts. My kid will swim HS in the morning and a PVS meet in the afternoon. But if they were in conflict the kids just have to pick one or the other. My kid would probably miss the PVS meet on Saturday and swim it just on Sunday but I can see others making a different choice depending on if they need to make certain championship cuts.

Our HS swim is early saturday so no conflict. Mine will also swim twice.

Is it just Fairfax that has such late HS swim meets?

This - MCPS meets can be any time 9a-7p Saturday, so there is no way to accommodate everyone. Kids have to make choices.

In our group, swimmers are unlikely to make new cuts at January meet, so they are not swimming Saturday so they are available for HS meets.

To miss a HS meet for an open meet or a non-invitational club meet is a big no go.

A big no go from who? Top club swimmers routinely prioritize their club meets.

Not an Open, though, unless they're chasing a cut in an event they haven't swam much.

There were several O days in FCPS on Fridays which made for more Sat. meets. Dec. 8, and Jan 19th. So normally there would have been meets on the 7th and 18th and none on Saturday.

Top club swimmers will prioritize big meets. NCAP Invite, RMSC Holiday, TYR Pro Swim Series and a few other big time meets. But a high level high school swimmer is wasting their time going to January Open. And if you check the results, the high end kids aren’t there as a general rule.

Yep, our entire group was only scheduled Sunday so they could swim HS meets. These are kids who are going for big cuts like NCSA/futures+. They’re probably not going to get them at January open, it’s not a meet to prioritize.

Our highest level HS training groups weren’t even scheduled to attend January Open, so it wasn’t a matter of prioritization.

Top club swimmers don't need to go to Jan Open

Private schools generally have high school meets during the week. Because all high schools have different schedules, it would be imposisble for PVS to avoid all conflicts.
