I have never run outside in this temperature. I will go on my treadmill or cross train but I’m so bored of the tread.
When do you determine it’s safe to go out after ice/snow like this? |
The temps don’t bother me but the ice is a problem. I couldn’t run today bc so many sidewalks weren’t consistently cleared where I was. I’m going to a low-traffic neighborhood tomorrow to run in the streets. |
Like PP said, it's the condition of the sidewalks/running paths that determine whether it's safe. We are unlikely to get temperatures that would make it unsafe to be outside, especially when you're moving. |
Any other tips? I'm waiting for it to warm up a bit. Hurry up sun! |
I run outside in winter, and actually have a low temp threshold of 23 degrees F. As others have said, the ice is the main concern. I used to run when it was icy out and fell 2 different times (yes, didn't learn the 1st time). The 1st time I twisted an ankle and couldn't run for about 3 weeks, the 2nd time I bruised my tailbone and was out for a month. Now, in my 50's I've come to the conclusion that it's not worth it, so I no longer run during icy weather. Be safe! |
I was the first PP. I did 4 miles on neighborhood streets this morning. Temps were fine. I Wore fleece leggings, long sleeve running shirt, vest, hat and gloves (which I removed). It’s fine on the neighborhood streets w/ low traffic. I avoided main roads bc every car speeding by was kicking up the road chemicals. |
Cover your ears and your hands. Invest in a good cold weather running jacket and heavier leggings (I have a special one of each that I only pull out for sub-35 degree runs) And enjoy! You’ll warm up in no time. |
Snow is fine - snow is great traction, and provides great cushion for your joints. Slow down, and it's lovely and comfortable.
Ice... don't mess with it. Just the cold? No big deal - layer up, and wear things you can remove as you get warm. But I am someone who will still sweat running when it's 20 degrees. |
I run better in the winter and the cold temps don't bother me. I warm up very quickly once I'm running. I ran on the treadmill today because I will not risk falling on ice to get my mileage in. Hoping to do a long run this weekend and will try to find a place where roads are completely clear. |
I ran in the snow monday, but not bothering going out again until the ice is gone. I start out with ear covers, a head wrap, and gloves, but the head wrap and gloves come off after I'm warmed up. I'm surprised how much I still sweat in the cold. I wore a shell Monday and regretted it - was a soggy wet mess inside it once I took it off mid-run. |
I know too many people who’ve gotten severe injuries from falls on ice to even think about it until everything is melted. |
I have a friend who runs every single day. On bad weather days but also in the winter when its super dark in the AM, she goes to a gym with an olympic type track. |
temperature is fine. Dress in light layers - but start off a little chilly because you WILL warm up.
I ran all through high school in cold cold temps (massachusetts). The ice IS a problem, though, so be very wary. |
With The icy conditions on the sidewalks, it might not be the ideal time for you to start outdoor running. Temps are fine but ice is not. I run In the streets on days like today but these are routes I take every single day and I know where the slick spots are and low traffic areas.
The suggestions in this thread are helpful for winter running temps but I might wait a few days to start until after the ice melts. |
