Strep throat as an adult

Anonymous
Last week I was really sick. I woke up with the worst sore throat. I thought I had a cold coming on. Never had a cough or runny nose. I tested for Covid and it was negative. Finally got a dr's appointment and it was confirmed I had step throat. My doctor said very few adults get strep unless thy have little kids. I do not. Anyone else get strep as an adult? It was awful.

Since I moved to the DC area, I would get strep multiple times a year as an adult. The only thing that has stopped it is wearing a mask indoors in public.

I think I may have strep. Was it sharp and pointy throat pain, or like vaguely raw all over? Did you have weakness and fatigue and sore bones and joints? Was it positive on rapid test or culture?

It was very raw all over but I had a headache and just wanted to sleep. It came on suddenly. When I looked at my throat with a flashlight I had white patches. I could barely swallow. Rapid test. I wish I had tested earlier. Sorry you're sick.

Sucks. Did they give you amoxicillin or Zpac?

I used to get Strep so often that I got my tonsils removed -- in my 30s! Folks, if you suspect strep, please go get tested. Any walk-in clinic can do it. It can lead to terrible complications you don't want. Get treated!

Last year I tested positive for strep and Covid at the same time. I was pretty sick, but it was the sore throat that was the worst of it all. Kept me up all night for a few days until I started the antibiotics.

It was the first time I’ve ever had it. I’ve got 2 teens and they have never had it.

I had it once. I had a cold at the same time and was taking Advil so dismissed the symptoms and did not realize how bad it was until about 5 days in when I let the Advil wear off and suddenly couldn't swallow without feeling like I was being stabbed by razor blades. I looked in my throat in the mirror and saw a bunch of white patches and was like, "Oh. That would explain it." Rapid test at the clinic came back positive. I was perversely relieved because unlike the cold, there was medicine that would fix it quickly.

I did not get strep when my kids were little and got it a lot, but one of my kids got it last year (now a teen) and I got it this time.

Super weird but I think it's cuz our immune systems were knocked back from Covid.

I didn't have much of a sore throat but I felt miserable in other ways. Just totally wiped me out.

My otherwise healthy DH gets strep occasionally. Our kids are grown and out of the house. I have never caught it from him or from our kids when they were little

I had it the first time 10 years ago. Everyone in the office I worked with had it. I had to go through 2 sets of antibiotics because it wouldn’t go away. I got it a 2nd time in late summer and then again last week.

I got strep twice last year. A mask didn't do diddly squat, since strep is more contact-based.
