Are you culturally related to your religion?

So many atheists and agnostics stay close to their birth religions. Why is that so?

For the nostalgia of childhood and family.

I don't know what "stay close" to your birth religion even means.
I suppose, as has been discussed a zillion times on here, we ignore the crazy, impossible stuff and accept the nice parts that make us feel good.
An example is the Cultural Catholics. Many have posted here.

Tradition I guess. I know many Jewish people who will tell you flat out they are agnostic or even atheist.

“Irish Catholic” is how my large family would describe itself, and it was an awareness once I got out in the world and learned other Catholics weren’t default Irish.

Tradition and family. A good % of younger folks in the US who are Muslim are in fact culturally Muslim, not praying 5 times a day Muslim. But they celebrate the 2 major holidays, eat the foods. It’s the traditions they grew up with. And in many/most families their age 50+ parents and grandparents would throw an absolute fit if they were to run around saying they weren’t Muslim. Much easier and nicer for family harmony to keep the culture, go to a holiday prayer and stuff yourself w the foods so your family can nicely believe you’re a super pious Muslim even though in their heart of hearts they obviously know.

Culture and religion intertwine. People like the culture but not the religion.

Well I’m of European ancestry and I’m atheist. I stay culturally close to Christianity because
Christianity is central to all our cultural things. And obviously I have very little problem with this because Christianity stole all the pagan culture and customs from them to create their own anyway.

Yes, defintiely.

I love some traditions. Mostly related to food.
However given MAGA and their heinous garbage has gone on this long nope don't beleive in a god.

No god would have made a MTG.

Or when a child dies. Or a child born with sin that's just absurd.

This has been refuted many, many times here. And, of course, it's been refuted by actual historians. For starters, although there are lots more historians saying the same thing: https://podtail.com/en/podcast/the-rest-is-history/402-christmas-pagan-or-christian/

Why do religious people stay close to their *parents*' birth religions?

Because religion is mostly culture. 9 year olds aren't studying all the religions of the world and choosing their favorite path.

In some ways, most of us pick and reject things from our inherited religion and culture, not blindly follow cultural traditions or religious interpretations we don't like or understand.

Instead of posting a link to a podcast, why not post the facts presented here? Not all of them, just the best one refuting the MANY sources indicating the opposite.
