AP Chem double period or taking AP Physics C and AP World History in 11th?

Anonymous
DD is thinking about doing STEM as a career. Hasn't decided whether she would want to enter in the life science or the engineering path.

She took AP Physics 1 and Hon Chem this year and have enjoyed both. Next year's schedule is a bit rigorous with her other classes, and she has two periods to fill. She is weighing on if she should take AP Chem double period, or do Physics C and AP World History. If she does AP Chem double period in 11th, she will do AP Physics C and AP World in 12th. Or vice versa -- wait for AP Chem in 12th and taking AP Physics C and AP World in 11th. FWIW, she'll be doing AP Calc BC in 11th and is an overall strong math student.

1. In terms of managing course load and time, would it (generally) require more time to do AP Chem double period, or both AP Physics C and AP World?
2. Is there a downside or upside to taking certain classes in 11th versus in 12th?

AP Chem is obviously less work. It's a double period for a single class. Why do schools do this?

Is AP Phys C the Mechanics, or both Mechanics and E&M?

At our school, AP Chem & AP Bio are double periods b/c one of them is a lab period.

If AP Chem is considered easier do it senior year. No need to stress during college apps. In my opinion do AP World and AP Physics C. You want to complete those graduation requirements asap just in case anything goes wrong during the year.

World History is required for graduation in Maryland, so I would encourage my child to do that in Jr. year with peers, rather than wait until Sr. year.

Just my two cents

Just curious but why is there a worry with not completing this in senior year? If you have a student is decent, is the worry that they will somehow fail the class?

We were told AP Chem is is difficult, but who knows.

I've never seen AP Chem on the easy AP lists. It has a less than 60% pass rate for the AP exam.

There is little risk of failure, but there is the social aspect of taking the class with your grade level cohort. Juniors take World.

How was the work load with 2 science classes? What math did she take?

US History and NSL are, but as far as I've seen, the req is just a 3rd social studies class, not specifically world history.

I am assuming you are asking me, the OP. She is taking Hon Chem and AP Physics 1 this year. She's also doing Pre-Calc. Work load seems manageable. AP Physics 1 is probably the hardest of all of them at this point. She was forewarn that AP Chem (the double period version with the lab) is very difficult and that Hon Chem does truly prepare the students for the AP version.

OP here. W.H. is required.

SOCIAL STUDIES 3 credits, 1 U.S. History credit, 1 World History credit, and 1 National, State, and Local Government credit aligned with the
MCA for government.

Thank you so much! My kid wants to take Hon Bio, AP Physics 1, and Hon Pre Calc next year. This is very helpful. Did you mean that Hon Chem does NOT truly prepare the students AP Chem?
