My kid is in APS second grade and we got her Cogat results last month. Would we have heard by now if she was automatically screened in for gifted services evaluation? I know we can do a parent referral either way, I'm just curious. Thank you! |
You probably won’t hear for a few more weeks. |
You get a letter if they are being screened.
Wondering would someone would do a parent referral if the scores don't warrant it? |
Your kid will be referred if the score is above 120 in any of the areas. Most schools won’t send referral letters til later in the winter. |
This is the OP. Sounds like my kid will be screened in if 120 is actually the floor - she scored 135 overall. But yeah I regret not referring her last year, because she's in a class without a gifted cluster this year and she misses her friends and the enrichment activities they did together (like book club, math group). She still gets extra challenges, but the peer group makes a big difference. |
135 will get screened. What did she get on the NNAT? I’m surprised she wasn’t picked up last year. |
I received the referral letter for my child today via email. |
She didn't do great on the NNAT. Not sure what that was about, since she generally does well on standardized tests, but it goes to show one test score shouldn't be the sole determinant. |
My daughter had the same profile- not great on NNAT but scored very high on COGAT. Her teachers were surprised about her NNAT scores but said some kids are more visual learners that do well on NNAT... and kids that are used to breezing through their work don't take their time on NNAT. Not sure if that's true but we were in Gifted after COGAT. |
We received the referral based on Nnat for my first grader earlier this week. Last year my other kid (who was in second grade) was referred by cogat but it didn’t come until later in the winter. |
What's the source of these emails? Is there some central APS office, or is it handled separately by each school? |
Haven't heard anything about screening either. Does each school operate on separate timelines? |
My kid’s came from the gifted resource teacher at our school. |
Similar here. Received a couple days ago from the "Advanced Academics Coach" at our school. My child is a 2nd grader, referred based on CogAT. |
My kid was dealing with some extra stresses when they did the testing and just didn’t answer the majority of the COGAT questions. There is a “skip question” option. The school has proctors who try to notice if a kid is doing this but they missed my kid so they won’t retest even though the answers show they she just skipped most questions to go to the next screen. The extra stress was my child missed a couple days of school and then when she returned a child she considered a friend kept telling her she was so behind because of the missed days and needs to repeat second grade as a result. My child believes this other child. It has been two months now and my child still asks me when I think she’ll catch up and if she can repeat 2nd grade because this other child keeps telling her she is still so far behind. I’ve talked to the teacher who tells me my child is not at all behind. |
