question about JOs and NCSAs

Is it typical for swimmers to not swim events at JOs if they are swimming those same events at NCSA a week and a half later?

It really depends. A swimmer with JO qualifying times in more than six events might mix it up and cover all their over the two meets, or they might just focus on their best events in both meets. Swimmers with less than six JO qualifying times will don't really have a choice at JOs because of the six event limit and no bonus events.

The coach will usually decide how to spread out events for best results.

My swimmer wants to swim the events that they won’t get to do at JOs at NCSAs because you get more swims there. My swimmer is already mapping out which events they will do at the February qualifier meet, JOs, and NCSAs. They have more than 6 JO cuts, but doesn’t have NCSA cuts in all their JO qualified events, so they are focused on getting as many NCSA cuts as they can. They will talk to their coach as well about mapping out those meets. Their coach is cognizant of cuts/goals for the kids at that level and works with them on event selection.

depends on the coach- some coaches will make you sit out your best events at JOs and save them for NCSA Age Group or some coaches will have you swim them again

Depends on coach and kid. School may be another consideration, especially for 9th graders. We have skipped Friday JO events when those were lower priority or being swam at NCSAs.

Our coach recommends doing an IMX like program at NCSAs while using JOs for kids “B” programs or off events.

What if the swimmers cuts for ncsa are not IMX events?

I am not sure there is a typical strategy - would depend on swimmer’s individual stats, goals and preferences.

For my kid’s club, coach would not save best events for NCSA, particularly if kid could do well in JO event. Would likely repeat events.

But there are lots of variables. One key one is event schedule. Coach has typically entered my kid in a schedule where he thinks kid will do best. So may choose to skip an event at meet if timing is bad, despite it being a good event for kid (example is won’t pick back-to-back events usually, even if both are top events for kid).

Coaches try to optimize meets for kids but that looks very different, swimmer to swimmer.

Word of caution from BTDT parent: My DC regretted saving "best" events for NCSAs where he would not make finals at NCSAs. He gave up opportunity to do prelims and finals at PVS JOs (same goes for Jr/Sr. Champs) in order to swim "best" events at NCSAs even though he was not going to make finals. Not an issue if your DC will make finals at NCSAs, but if they won't, I suggest doing best events at JOs so they can get in an prelims and a finals.

Won't make same mistake this year. Going to swim best events at Jr/Sr. Champs and then again at NCSAs to get in prelims/finals swims in March.

Question for the BTDT NCSA parents: it looks there are 3 heats of finals for the 12 and unders, is that first heat the fastest 11 year olds (or I guess this year would include any 9 and 10 year olds that make it)? Trying to plan what that week will look like and how much free time we will have. My 11 year old is unlikely to make the A or B finals but if the C final is limited to just the younger kids, she will be solidly in that mix in her best events.

THIS. When child was 13/14 coach wanted to save best events for NCSA Age Group- I argued they should make finals at JOs then swim again if they wanted to. Boy did that not go over well lol.

Child did final at Jos and dropped time in same events at NSCA Age Group, proving him wrong. He was a clown of a coach anyway- just shows sometimes they don't know everything just bc they act like they do!
