If you could move anywhere in the country/world and money would not be an object where would you go?

I have often thought about this. A good long time friend of mine just divorced (and got a lot of money in the process) so she's a free agent as she put it. Her kids are in college yet she's young enough to lead an active life. She lives locally (northeast) but is fulfilling her lifelong dream to move to Jackson Hole, Wyoming and will get a small apt in the DC area (her kids are in the area). I am so excited for her. She went there many many times through the years and always loved it so much. It will be fun to follow her journey.

Me? I would probably say an area like Avignon, France, I also love Woodstock, Vermont (many good memories there) and Middleburg, VA (am an equestrian) So maybe as long as I am dreaming, a small place in each

I’m in the same boat as your friend (or will be in 3-5 depending on how long it takes the youngest to launch) so I think about this a lot!

First is the NOs
I refuse to live anywhere that is a destination for rich people. Places where there’s a stark divide between those that work and those that just play. So JH and Aspen, while lovely, are out. Dubai, while fascinating, is out.

Has to be somewhere from where I can get back to the US east coast in a day (aging parents and professional considerations) so most of Asia is out

Climate matters. Diversity matters. My ability to learn the language at at least a functional level matters.

So I’m looking at either major European cities (Paris, London) or major SA cities (buenos Aires, Medellin.) Or good old NYC, at least for a good part of the year.

I can’t wait to strip my life down to the bedrock. Ditch all the furniture, give away one thousand books, sell the cars, etc. Find a small apartment in the most interesting part of someplace beautiful and live for experiences and thoughts instead of things and other people.

I would live in Venice (away from the crowds - there are areas if you know the city well enough) and have a place in the Alps to get away to during August and Carnivale.

Coast of Portugal or southern France perhaps. I love being by the water and being able to walk everywhere. Agree with having almost no possessions and an apartment with a view of the sea.

If money were no object maybe also a cottage on the coast of Maine.

I would move back to India to live near family.

I'd find a small, patriotic , diverse American town, build a factory, build myself a mansion, and be the patron of the people.

There is this myth that single people can hop up and live anywhere. We have jobs in specific career fields, need to be near doctors, etc.

It’s not a myth, it’s just not for everyone. My 9-5 job will easily transition to consulting. My partner can work from anywhere. We have no health problems and if we did, most of the developed world has better healthcare than the US. We’re multilingual. We’ve lived abroad before. For us the adventure and the QOL improvement will outweigh the hassles. Of course our situation isn’t universal. Nothing is.

Spain in a heartbeat. I dream about it all the time. Alas, kids, aging parents, beloved siblings are all in the US and spouse has zero interest in Spain

I’d get out of the US and move to Singapore. Tropical and safe and easy to get to a lot of other cool places.

I’m actually really happy where I am (in the mid Atlantic, not DC). I have a home I love, a great community, plenty of amenities and access to lots of great places in a relatively short distance.
