Business + CS Minor major in Southern California

DC has good but not great grades. She is interested in moving to SoCal ( done with NOVA)

Wont get into UC’s based on her grades. So searching for other options.

With $$ not a concern ( 529 maxed out thanks to investing since 2007) what other options do we have in SoCal?

LMU? What about the various Cal States? San Diego State?

Not sure about Business/CS major but check out

Cal Poly Slo (San Luis Obispo), Occidental, Pitzer, Scripps, Pepperdine, Santa Clara U, Loyola Marymount, University of SanDiego and Cal State Universities.

No, no, Cal States are for residents of California. Absolutely check out University of San Diego, LMU and Occidental. There’s also Chapman, which I personally don’t like as much but a really good option if your kid is interested in entertainment careers. Skip Pepperdine, very religious and isolated. Full pay helps!

PP is correct. While OOS students are allowed to apply - 95% + students are in state

LMU would be a nice option, especially ED

Pepperdine is too conservative and a bit creepy to send my daughter there

Why bother minor, get a major in cs then minor in the less useful degree

I don't know why this is your hill but, not really accurate. There is an in-state preference, but most CSU are in-state simply because they get minimal out-of-state interest. SDSU and Cal Poly SLO are both 15% out-of-state and at SLO that's only 1% international. Those are the difficult admits, the rest are pretty much open arms. Plenty of other reasons they might be of no interest, but they are an option, and most are far better than Chapman.

I’m not sure who you think you are responding to, but I’m the PP and a California resident. Perhaps you misinterpreted my point, but Cal States are best for California residents. Why in the world would someone from DMV want to attend SDSU? The campus has a commuter feel, it’s not attractive, and virtually all of your classmates would be Californians. It’s a ridiculous suggestion. Of the Cal States, I could only recommend Cal Poly SLO, which has a stronger residential life and well-regarded engineering/architecture/landscaping programs.

If someone from DMV is looking to attend college in So Cal, USD, LMU and Occidental are my recommendations. All great choices.

The OP said Southern California, not the greater Bay area.

Also not a realistic option for a student who isn’t competitive for UCs.

Chapman has a very good business program; not sure about CS - could also be great, just don't know. It's a nice private university and I think your daughter could get more personalized attention at a private school. Orange is a cute town too.
