MY 9 YEAR OLD SON STILL BEDWETTING

Anonymous
My DS recently turned 9. He has never been dry at night. He wears a GoodNites diaper and it is wet every morning. Sometimes it actually goes through the diaper! He has no medical issues (although he was dx with ADHD recently). We limit his fluid intake in the evenings.

The pediatrician acknowledged it’s fairly rare at this age but said it’s still normal. I’m wondering if others have experienced something similar and their child outgrew it? Wondering if there could be a structural or other medical problem? I have an appt with a pediatric urologist but first opening was in early January.

This only happens at night, not during the day. I know each child is different but my younger son has been dry every night since he was 3 so it’s just a little worrisome.

Maybe it’s emotional. Is there something your DS is nervous about? Hopefully you have a relationship with him in which he feels comfortable being open with you—otherwise it will be harder to troubleshoot. My DS went through a phase and after a discussion, I figured out what he was worried about and the accidents stopped.

Does he struggle with constipation?
It’s often linked.

It's not unusual. Often runs in families, more common in boys. Is he a heavy sleeper? If so, he's not waking enough to receive the cues.

Do a sleep study to rule out nocturnal seizures?

If you’re screeching in all caps about something the pediatrician told you was, to quote you directly, “still normal,” maybe your son is picking up on your anxiety. That can’t be good.

WTH? Why would that need to be ruled out?

My 8 year old DS is like this. Ditching the pull ups helped us, although we still have to wash and change his sheets 2x a week or so. My MIL says DH was a bed wetter too, pediatrician isn’t concerned.

Yes.
My kid outgrew it.
Total PITA, though.
Wore pull-ups for a long time. Sleepovers were problematic.
Had a "pee alarm" for a while, but that didn't work.
Rubber mattress cover essential, several in fact.
He outgrew it eventually, sometime in middle school.
We woke him in the AM and hustled him into the bathroom, which seemed to help a bit.

8 year old boy same story. Doc said it's related to adhd, something about brain development. Also it runs in the family and is genetic. No advice just echoing that youre not alone.

My 9 year old went to a urologist over occasional bed wetting. The Dr said he had a small bladder for his age. He gave us a prescription for when my son slept over a friends house. It gradually stopped as he grew.

MAYBE ITS BECAUSE YOU'RE ALWAYS YELLING.

What time is dinner usually and when is bedtime? Do you let him have water after dinner?

Does he snore? Bedwetting is a symptom of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea.

The bed wetting alarm worked for us. The one that hooks to their underwear.
