| It doesn’t start til 1/14 and I just realized this. This means I’m uninsured from 1/1-1/14; I’m uncomfortable with that. (We switched policies) anything I can do? |
| Who were you getting insurance from before? Through your spouse's employer plan? |
| Are you the one who already posted about this? |
| Are you eligible for Cobra from previous plan? You can chose Cobra retroactively for that time period if you end up needing medical care. |
| No new poster I just found out today. We had it through my employer. I assumed (incorrectly) that the start date would be 1/1; my husband did the enrollment and didn’t mention the 1/14 to me. |
I’m still employed it was a voluntary switch (which I am now thinking I should not have done) |
I looked to see if there was a similar thread but couldn’t find one - if anyone has the link will see if any good options there. I’m mostly worried about a car accident/ heart attack situation in those two weeks. |
PP here. Found it: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1175212.page |
when you change enrollment you have to put a start date/end date for the previous policy you were under and then the insurances coordinate benefits if you are double-covered. there should not be a period when you dont have coverage-why would the insurance start 1/14? also fed HR- IME- is AWFUL with changes. they may be great for new employees but they were a disaster when my husband switched agencies and we got married before he started at the new agency. they literally took his benefits set up from march or april and just transferred it, even though we got married in may and that was a qualifying event where we changed coverage. it took months to even it and get reimbursed because they were taking out premiums but he didnt have coverage. |

To make sure I understand, let me try to summarize. OP is a non-fed, and previously had coverage through her employer. She voluntarily dropped coverage by her employer plan in order to switch to a family plan with her fed husband. But her employer coverage ended 1/1, while the fed plan starts 1/14.
Right? |
Correct yes |
| Look up Short term health insurance. |
It's too late for that. She wouldn't be able to quickly get a policy that would cover anything. |
| Barring some unique circumstances or provisions in your employer plan, you're probably out of luck, OP. |
| Just don’t go ice skating or zip-lining, or eat peanut brittle or anything like that |
