iPhone mini

Would your middle schooler be disappointed to get an iPhone 13 mini? You can only get them refurbished online now but I think they’re super cute and fits so much more easily into a pocket or a purse. I don’t know if the trend now is the bigger the better since it seems like all her friends have the 14 and now upgrading to the 15, which all have huge screens.
We’ve held off this long on getting her phone, so we want to tread lightly, but at the same time we don’t wanna have to upgrade within a year and we don’t want her to be made fun of for having such a small phone since she’s currently made fun of for not having a phone at all. Thanks for any advice.

I’m not a hard ass parent and I definitely buy my kid plenty of expensive Nike stuff when target would do but if they complained about the size of a phone, they would not get a phone. My middle schooler has an SE, which is the same size as the 13 mini and it works out great fits into his pocket.

My middle schooler would be ecstatic to get an iPhone 13 mini, but they will have to be content with a dumb flip-phone, because that is all we are willing to get them.

Our child has enough internet/video/TV/computer distractions already, and adding a smart phone to the mix would be adding fuel to the fire.

She will probably just be happy with anything.

It’s a pretty bad state of things if your kid is going to complain about receiving any iPhone in ms. Better plan is to give her a flip phone or keep her phone free. Have you seen the research about what phone use does to kids that age?

No, please educate me. She’s at a school where she’s literally the only seventh grader without a phone. Of course I prefer that we would live in a world where she doesn’t need to have a phone to keep friendships, but I cannot keep being this parent.

If your child is unhappy with an iPhone 13mini, you are raising her wrong.

Have you not read any news in the past year? Start here: https://www.waituntil8th.org/. Then Google Instagram and teen girls, google youth mental health crisis. Google tech leaders and phones for their own children. That’s a start.

My 15 yo daughter has a mini and it's fine.

My 20 yo has a 12 mini we gave her as a HS graduation gift. She asked for that over the regular 12 because she preferred the smaller size.

My friend got her daughter an iPhone mini a couple of years ago, which she liked at first but eventually wanted a bigger screen. I think it depends on how you think your daughter will use the phone. If she’s going to be watching a bunch of videos on it, a standard iPhone is probably better.

Mine purposely chose the mini because she liked it for some reason. She was older and not as swayed by commentary from friends. But kid’s definitely asked why she had a small one.

Personally I have the mini and I love it (chose on purpose). It’s so much easier to fit in your pocket and isn’t gigantic. I’m an adult though.

That’s a good point. My daughter has an extremely long bus ride to and from school, like 40 minutes each way, so I anticipate she will be looking at her screen a lot watching videos.
