Dizziness and loss of vision following a leg cramp

Anonymous
Had an unexpected experience in the early AM. Woke up with a sudden leg cramp and flew off the bed to walk it off. Made way to bathroom where I also used the toilet (standing up, male, fyi). Then when I finished, suddenly everything went weird. I went dizzy, couldn't see anything. I think I went down to the floor and eventually managed to get back up. Made my way very gingerly to the bedroom without seeing anything and remember fumbling with the light switch only for a sense of a blurred light, like a light through closed eyelids. Switched it off. Eventually sight returned and I laid back down on the bed, sweating heavily. But that cooled off fairly quickly.

I suspect the whole episode lasted minutes though it felt longer. Never had anything like this happen before. I can also add that when swimming earlier this afternoon, towards the end of the swim I felt the beginning of a small toe cramp and called it quits. Then afterwards, through dinner, I felt as if the beginning of some kind of virus was descending. But after dinner it cleared up and all was well. Till this incident.

Never had anything like this happen before. Perhaps unrelated? Who knows. I assume some kind of temporarily loss of blood pressure is what caused the dizziness and collapse to floor, but would a cramp cause that? The peeing after a cramp?

I would be concerned about a blood clot in the leg.

Go to the ER now!

If that happened to me it would have been vasovagal syncope because of the pain from the cramp. But I know what it feels like because it’s a thing that happens to me. If you’ve never had that, you should go get checked out.

I would get it checked out immediately. My spouse was complaining of intense leg cramps right before he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The dizziness and cramp may be signs of a seizure.

It's quite possible the two are related, but not always. I get terrible dizzy spells, see stars, and need to sit back down when I stand up too quickly - I have extremely low blood pressure usually 90/60. In your case it could be for other reasons. Read the link below.

The vision loss description and sweating would be concerning.

I have had low blood pressure most of my life, and passing out after peeing in the middle of the night just happens sometimes. Things get dark and I see stars, but my vision has never been blurry.

Please, see a doctor.

That is how mine started, with a cramp. Problem was that I didn't know that was what it was.

TBH, I do not think the fainting or cramp is serious. You said you leaped out of bed. It's very common for people to pass out when they change position from lying down to standing up extremely rapidly. It's called orthostatic hypotension. If it's one time
or even couple time thing, I would worry about it at all. If it starts happening frequently or in association with something else, then you should see a doctor.

NP I’ve had this happen from gut pain - thought I was having a heart attack. Thankfully was not. My much more cool headed friend called me an ambulance jic. Our family has a history of cardiac issues- was very grateful to have it checked out.

The vasovagal syncope experience is wild.

Prob the quick positional change. Keep an eye on it. DVT can sneak up on you. Might simply be dehydration though.

There are many, many innocuous explanations for everything you described. But your story is littered with enough red flags to tip the balance in favor of getting checked out. It’s probably nothing, but if it is something, it could be some serious stuff. So just go see a doc.

OP what happened? I hope you got checked out. I’m a big avoider of going in, but when I lost vision in an eye for a little bit, I went to the ER. With all the other factors, 100% go.
