Divorce lawyer that’s not QUITE a shark

Anonymous
I’m looking for a recommendation for a divorce attorney that’s not necessarily a shark but that will look at my best interests. DH and I are almost done writing our own separation agreement and neither of us want to litigate.

However he’s asking that we each have a lawyer look over the agreement before signing, and while I don’t want someone who’s a shark and will stir the pot, I also want someone who will genuinely present me with viable options for protecting me and my interests in the agreement. Definitely don’t want to be pushed to litigation.

Any recommendations? We are in Northern Virginia.

Carolyn Grimes is very levelheaded and practical. I recommend her. She looks out for your interest without trying to cause drama.

Brian Hirsch. I interviewed Carolyn Grimes but found her more aggressive than I wanted.

Be sure that you and whoever you hire fully understands what a QDRO is and how important it is to get one done correctly if needed in your particular situation. Most divorce attorneys don't have a clue about these and will just refer it out to a service that produces cut and paste QDROs.

I just did a consult with Heather cooper and loved her. She wasn’t the right fit for what i need because there’s a chance my situation may end up a sloppy litigious mess which doesn’t work with her current schedule, but I really liked her a lot. She seemed like she’d be perfect for what you’re looking for.

PP -- Who did you go with instead of Heather Cooper? I may be in a situation that sounds similar to yours....

You don’t know what you are talking about. QRDOs can be done by software or even Excel. I did my own with no training.

What exactly do you need them to look over? What issues are you concerned about will bring you to litigation? Get the checks in hand and then sign.

Checking out how may times the lawyer is in court is a good strategy. You can check the friday Motions calendar in NoVa, which is public. Or google your lawyer with “Virginia of Appeals” . This will tell you if the person likes to litigate. Litigators love to fight and litigate. That is what they do. Even to negotiate… they litigate. They don’t care if their gains outpace their bill to you. They are risk junkies. Don’t let them gamble with your money.
