| I am a picky eater but am trying to expand. I hate anything spicy (so does my rosacea), or raw, but can eat dim sum and chinese food. What kind of thai dishes would be similar to lo mein or chicken with cashews or har gow or broth-based soups? I need a jumping off point, but get overwhelmed looking at menus. |
| Pad Thai is generally a great starter dish for Thai food. Many Thai places will have pineapple fried rice or something similar that is pretty good. |
|
Pad Thai with chicken for you. American-made it won't be spicy.
Assuming you're not allergic to peanuts or some shit like that. |
| Pad see ew is another easy noodle dish. |

Pad Thai
Satay chicken Penang Chicken if you want to try curry |
| I'm not the biggest fan of Thai food. The strong fermented smell of some of the dishes bothers me. You may want to look for vegetarian options that exclude fish sauce. |
+1 for Pad Thai. Was my pathway into Thai food as a kid. You’re in for a treat, OP. SO many delicious foods. |

Chicken satay with peanut sauce
Fried rice Pad thai (noodle dish, can be made spice or mild -- make sure to specify) Yellow curry (will be more mild than red, green, or panang) Make sure anything you order is either served with rice or order a side of rice -- if you are sensitive to spice, mixing anything you eat with a rice before you try it will dilute it and make it easier to tell if it's the right flavor profile for you. My DD is a picky eater who is sensitive to spice and I serve a lot of dishes with a side of rice for her to mix in for this reason. Stay away from: larb gai, papaya salad, drunken noodles, other curries (all my favorites! I love spicy food!) |
| + pad thai and pineapple fried rice as entry American Thai food. Spring rolls and summer rolls too. |
This. Add in Pad See Ew, and you can’t go wrong. |
Isn't curry spicy? |

This thread is making me Huuuungry.
Penang Chicken is a peanut/red curry I think and it's not spicy at all. Ask for "American Spicy" or "Not Spicy" - they are so good about that. |
| It's.... chicken and rice. |
| Get chicken Penang curry from Tara Thai. It’s not spicy at all. |
I find some pad thais too spicy (yes I’m aware I’m a wimp don’t @ me) but I love pad see ew. Big flat noodles, never spicy, available at every Thai restaurant. I also usually like chicken satay and the samosa things from the appetizer menu. Get dessert — mango with coconut sticky rice and fried bananas in Americanized Thai and really tasty. |
