Donate or Craigslist or Recycle or Trash a Drop-Side Crib?

Anonymous
What would you do with yours? Ours is a neighbors' hand-me-down and it's been great. But now, with the recalls, what do we do with it when we're done?

Will any organizations even take them now?
Is it too much liability to sell it on Craigslist?
It's wood, so would it be recyclable?
Or do we just do the least-preferable thing and trash it?

I'd try donating it. A lot of places won't take cribs in general though. The recall fixes lately have been sending a kit to make the dropside immovable - whatever organization might be able to get one and use the crib. It's worth a try.

We trashed ours about a month ago.

Craigslist won't allow you to sell it once the new law takes effect.

try Freecycle?

If you list a recalled or problematic item someone from craigslist or fda will actually email you and tell you that you cannot sell the item.

It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product. Hence, donation places won't take it either. It is best for everybody to trash it if you chose not to avail yourself of whatever repair options are offered.

Not OP but wondering the same thing. We have a Pali dropside that has not been recalled but I wonder if there will be any market or taker for it Anyway. What are folks doing with their dropsides that have not been recalled and have no fixes?

I kind of want to keep it (for sentimental reasons), but we'll be moving next year and there is no reason to keep it. I was going to put it on craiglist, but I had no idea you can't put anything that's been recalled on there (thanks pp) so I might freecycle it or just put it in the trash.

I just gave one away recently. I posted it for free on a mom's listserve that I belong to. I made sure that the person who got it was aware of the issue with the drop side and told her to get the safety kit from the manufacturer. It had been used by my 2 kids with no problems and was in excellent condition. The woman who got it told me that it would not be used very often - just when her granddaughter who lives out of state comes to visit. I felt comfortable with that arrangement and thought it was better than putting a good crib in the trash.

RETURN IT. When items are recalled the manufacturer or the store you bought it from has to refund your money. We recently took our recalled Simplicity Ellis crib back to Target, NO QUESTIONS ASKED.

How long ago did you purchase it?

Ours was bought in 2006 - I doubt Sears (that's where we boughts ours) would take it back.

OP here. I cannot return it; it is over 10 years old and was a hand-me-down from a neighbor. I think I will call the manufacturer for an immobilizer kit and then donate it if they have one. If not, then I will trash it. Thank you for your ideas!

When does to law take effect?

I have two Sorrelle drop side cribs. Neither were recalled. Is it illegal to sell them? Honestly I don't know how I would have done it without the dropside. I'm short with a bad back.

Which Target store was this? I'd hate to pack up all the parts (which means taking out carseats) only to get to the store and them tell me no way. Ours was a gift, no receipt. I know Target has gotten more strict about receipts.

since when does recalling mean free returns? i was under the impression that manufacturers were just sending out retrofit kits to disable the drop side mechanism? (that is, at least, what the manufacturer of our crib said it is doing.)
