First-gen Americans - what was your Thanksgiving meal?

Born and raised in India - we had mac&cheese, roasted masala potatoes, gravy, a rice dish with mint, pinenuts and cranberries, turkey breast from the store for the lone meat eater, and rolls of bread with a spicy butter spread. Pumpkin bebinca (tastes like pie without the filling) and cardamom icecream for dessert.

Bebinca - pie filling without the crust

I am from India, spouse is from Europe. We don’t like either turkey or pumpkin. We made tandoori chicken, vegetable pulao, dal makhani, aloo gobhi, saag paneer, naan, raita, masala papad, tamarind margaritas , mango lassi and cranberry-apple pie.

This sounds delicious. Thanksgiving is not my favorite holiday and I keep it bland for my in laws.

Mac & cheese, green beans, roasted carrots, candied yams, mashed potatoes, roasted chicken legs, fried catfish, gravy. Apple pie and ice-cream.

My parents are European, but I grew up here. We always did the standard roast turkey, but different sides than people here typically have. For us it was potatoes roasted in the turkey pan so they absorb all the flavor from the drippings, stuffing, red cabbage, Brussels sprouts. No mashed potatoes, no green bean casserole, no sweet potatoes with marshmallows, no rolls or cornbread.
This is what I made for us today-though I did do biscuits for my picky kid.

My mom always made pea soup or lentil soup from the turkey stock made from the carcass. I made stock tonight, haven’t decided what soup I’ll do.

Brit here. We did Turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, roasted sprouts, cranberry sauce and cauliflower cheese. Apple pie and cream for dessert. We can't get used to some of the typical American sides like the sweet potatoes with marshmallows and green bean casserole either!

This sounds great and within “traditional”

What is cauliflower cheese? Like a cauliflower au gratin?

How is the red cabbage seasoned?

Our porchetta and roasted sweet potatoes tasted great. The Apple sangria made us a bit giddy lol. So glad we skipped the turkey!

It’s German-style. Braised in vinegar and a tiny bit of sugar. You can throw in a little apple too if you like it sweeter.

It's delightful that good ol mac and cheese are making it onto these menus. Do you make m&c on the regular or is this a special dish for the day?

For us, Mac & cheese made from scratch with fresh cheese and baked in the oven at Thanksgiving is a treat. The rest of the year, it comes from an Annie’s box and is generally kid-fare.
