| I'm hosting Thanksgiving for the first time, and in addition to several homemade pies for dessert, I am going to make whip cream to top them with. Do I just put it out in a bowl with a spoon? Is there a better way? |
|
It’s whipped cream. Not whip cream.
Yes, put in a bowl with a spoon unless you want to put it in a pastry bag and serve everybody. |
|
You should add gelatin to stabilize it unless you're sure they're going to eat it right away
Serve it from a canister dispenser (canister, cartridge, whippits) |

Yes bowl with a spoon is fine. In my family since there are often a lot of people we usually take orders for pjs, one of the kids takes orders which they love and tally it up on a sheet. The order includes whether you want whipped cream and then we just add it on while serving and deliver.
There are whipped cream canisters you can buy to put your homemade whipped cream in. My parents have it but it’s definitely not necessary! |
We just make it fresh at pie time, have never used gelatin. It takes less than 5 min to make |
It will last a couple of hours without stabilizers. |
| Yup— in a bowl. Take a spoon and swirl it a bit for a fancy finish, or not. Your guests are going to be so thrilled to have fresh whipped cream they will take no notice. In my family, after it gets put on pies, people just start eating it from spoons until it is gone. |
| NP here. If you make it like six hours in advance and put it in a bowl in the fridge, does it keep its shape? |
I've never used gelatin either. I make it in the morning. It lasts 2-3 days. |
Yes. It is easy to make and far superior to cool whip. |
| We just spoon it on. It works fine. |
|
I serve in a large wide-mouth jar (like a short squat mason jar).
If you are keeping it in the fridge, make sure it keep it sealed/covered. It picks up smells. |
| Bowl with spoon is fine. Don’t add gelatin. It tastes weird and is unnecessary if you’re making it day of as you should be. I usually beat mine during the break between dinner and dessert while water is boiling for tea, etc. If you have an electric mixer it’s really quick and easy. |
What are pjs? Assuming you don’t put whipped cream on pajamas. Not judging if you do. |

You’ll be fine with it in a bowl in the fridge all day.
You only need gelatin if you’re going to use it to frost a cake or something and it needs to last for days. |
