Please recommend a therapist for a male struggling with excessive alcohol use

Anonymous
I would greatly appreciate all recommendations for a therapist who can support a 30s male struggling with excessive alcohol use and stress. Ideally Arlington/NOVA. I have no idea if/how insurance plays into this, but we have BCBS if relevant. We are fortunate to be able to pay out of pocket if this isn't something insurance covers.

Please be kind. I am pregnant and trying to stay calm as we deal with this.

Op, is person in question on board with this? If not, you’re asking in vain.

He is willing to do it.

OP, no recommendations for a particular therapist, but AlAnon is probably going to be key for other family members. Wishing strength and peace for you.

Thank you. A dear friend has been very supported through Al Anon, so I've been considering it. I appreciate the thoughtful message.

He needs treatment for substance abuse disorder. See who your insurance company covers for that.

It is good he is open to treatment.

Good luck to you and your child.

He needs a psychiatrist, specializing in addiction. Look at psychology today site or ask your insurance company.

I'm sorry I don't have a therapist recommendation, but I used the Reframe App last year after struggling for years with a drinking problem.

I did use a counselor from the program for awhile as well.

Best of luck.

Enter your zip code and your insurance
Enter alcohol addiction
Enter young adult (as opposed to adolescent)

See who pops up, who is taking new patients, and co tact several. It takes a while to hear back some may not ha e appointments when the patient is available, some might not actually be taking new patients, and you want someone the patient clicks with

Not affiliated with the site, but am surprised every time when people ask for therapists that they don't know about it. Have successfully used it for one kid with anxiety, one with ADHD, and once for marriage counseling when spouse and I were dealing with the kids issues and going crazy

I did a lot of research a year ago but haven't followup up yet with making actual appointments (that's another story). These 3 NoVA psychiatrists were recommended for men with alcohol issues:

Dr. Joseph Balzarett
Dr. Mark Sakran
Dr. Christopher Schubert

Good luck.

Lots of options, including getting an rx for naltrexone and doing a program like AA or smart recovery (online or in person meetings). There are also programs like monument, again connects you online to a therapist and gives you an rx for medications that can help extinguish cravings. A multi pronged approach (medication, group support, individual therapy) helped a good friend of mine who is now 2 plus years sober.

A terapist wont help. He needs meds and detox and AA.

You might want to look at an intensive outpatient program. I don’t have personal experience but I believe Inova has programs. One hour/once a week therapy is probably not enough to start with.
