Record number of ED / EA to UVA

Tens of thousands of out-of-state applicants. So much for the posters who insist that nobody outside of this region cares about UVA.

"The University is also partnered with 62 Virginia high schools through the Virginia College Advising Corps, which aims to increase the number of underrepresented high school students in higher education. 1,085 students attending these high schools applied early to the University, a 22.5 percent increase from the previous year."

Thanks for sharing!

The numbers are up but only by a little bit. Interesting how the numbers of minority applicants are up and first generation are down.

Is it true that there will be no deferrals to the RD pool from EA and ED this year? You go straight to waitlist or out?

This is correct. I think Dean J said there were so few students who ended up getting offers from deferrals, that it was not in the best interest of applicants to continue.

What date are ED and EA acceptances expected to be announced this year?

Dean J said on Instagram this week not to expect an earlier date than the announced dates but that they often are able to release decisions a few days early.

Yes - also what I understood. Although it wasn’t minuscule - maybe 9% or something. I don’t remember the exact percentage but in the scheme of highly selective college admissions, it wasn’t nothing. But I hope more schools move away from mass deferrals and let kids move on more easily. But I also hope they don’t abuse the waitlist and leave tons of kids there either.

if these numbers are right, back of the envelope math indicates that the increase is mostly driven by international/OOS apps.
Instate: 11,718 in 2022 and 10,593 in 2023.

How do they have demographic data?

We aren’t checking boxes anymore. My kid and most everyone we know left it blank.

The article answers that: On their applications, students were able to self-identify races and ethnicities. Although the University allows applicants to select multiple races and ethnicities, the U.S. Department of Education regulations mandate that each student be included in only one group. Application readers will not have access to the self-disclosed “checkbox” information.

FWIW the article says no. of white applicants dropped: "The only marked decrease was with all-white students, which decreased by 0.9 percent

This is also my question.

My child left it blank everywhere on the common app. UVA does not have a clue what race he is.

Am I the idiot who should have told him to check the box?
