| My daughter is a nerd and proud of it. She does not care for stupid drama, drinking or weed. Is William and Mary the best fit for her?? We have been on campus on a Friday afternoon and it was dead quiet. Same on Sunday and a Monday. |
| The best in state fit for sure. Does she have the grades? They require more than being a nerd. |
If she doesn't have the grades for William and Mary, the correct choice is Mary Washington. Right? |
I think so. My DD sounds similar and only applied to UMW and W&M in-state. CNU is also a similar size but DD hated it. She ended up waitlisted at W&M, accepted with merit aid at UMW, and went to an OOS LAC. |
| Just FYI, your daughter will find “stupid drama, drinking, and weed” at any school she goes to. Including W&M. |
That's interesting that you said it was dead quiet on a Friday afternoon, Sunday and a Monday. What day/time? Was it the same weekend? I have one DS that graduated from W&M and one that is currently a student there. Every time I've been on campus, there are lots of students wandering around. If the weather is good, there are usually kids sitting in the sunken garden or around the Sadler Center. All freshmen and sophomores are required to live on campus - even students who live in Williamsburg are required to live on campus. I was just there for Family Weekend, and it also was the weekend before Halloween. On Friday night, I saw hundreds of students, all in Halloween costumes. There were kids walking to go into the fraternity houses. As I was leaving campus, I saw large groups of students in costumes walking on the main road around campus. Yes, there is a drinking at W&M. But it is also "cool" to study and do homework. My older DS loved it and my younger one does too. They both are pretty social but much prefer to hang with a small group of people, drinking a beer and watching a sporting event. They do not enjoy loud, crowded "Animal House" style parties, which I don't think are the norm at W&M. |
| My non-nerdy kid (boyfriend was a star athlete and she was pretty and popular and mainstream) haaaated W&M when she visited. Ended up at UVA. |
What I ment by dead quite is no kegs flowing. No weed smell. Seems like a nerd paradise. If you go to UVA on a Friday afternoon the kegs are flowing at the Frat houses! |
+1 |
Did you visit the frats at W&M? I’m thinking no. When I was a student, SAE had liquid lunch on Fridays… |
Every college has drugs and alcohol don’t be absurd and get off your high horse Your kid isn’t better than other kids bec they choose to be what you call a nerd. Grow up and your kid will make it one semester if that. William and Mary has the same drugs as any other school. |
Yeah. I find that prior post odd. My brother who was the biggest partier around (also D1 top recruit) recently said 'have him go to W&M, he'll have way more fun than X school'. I was surprised. I said I thought it was very serious and he had a lot of teammates (similar socially to him) that ended up there and absolutely loved it. I think you can find what you are looking for. IF you want a stadium like Lane Stadium or Notre Dame, of course, it's not a fit. You aren't going to have that level of tailgating, partying, etc., but it certainly isn't a dead campus. My son plays a sport (not football) and isn't really into football---he'd rather watch Bundesliga or Premier league soccer. I think it would be a good fit. We visited recently and the campus was really lively. |
Which one? |
+1. There's always Liberty or Regent |
So cliche. Star athlete with the pretty, popular girk. It is 2023. How are her grades? Career options? Try to evolve people. |
