Toddler has a mild case of RSV. No fever, acting totally normally with normal energy levels, Dr says lungs sound good. Has a bad cough and a mild runny nose. No wheezing. This is day 6 of symptoms but just tested positive today.
Would you send back to daycare in this scenario? No strict daycare policy except fever free 24 hours but DC hasn’t had fever at all. |
| No! Your kid is contagious. |
Thanks! What rule of thumb would you use to send them back? (Lots of coughing / runny nose kids in her room and if she feels good I’d prefer to keep her routine so this is an honest question! Dr said it’s about how we feel…) |
| Oh man. I absolutely would not, but my infant also almost died from RSV - I would feel absolutely horrible if I knew we had RSV and my family exposed anyone |
| Presumably your kid got it from daycare, they’re all already exposed anyway. Do whatever the daycare policy allows and you feel comfortable with. |
| Day 6 of symptoms? They’ve got to be past the super contagious phase by now. If the child is able to go an appreciable amount of time without having their nose wiped and can nap with the cough, I’d send them. I assume my kids get RSV pretty regularly at daycare every winter; we only get them tested to identify what kind of cold they have if there’s a bad fever or a scary sounding cough for over a week or two. I’m pretty impressed you have a week+ of leave to burn on this. |
| No, but I'm a decent person. How is this even a question? |
| I’d wait 8 days from symptoms which my pediatrician advised. It can be a horrible virus for babies and toddlers. I just started a job and my toddler has been sick (including COVID) every other week and it sucks. |
Ha - I don’t which is why I’m asking the question as I want to do the right thing here. Naps/sleeping at night are fairly unimpacted save a couple coughing fits that don’t really wake DC up (or they fall back asleep unassisted at least). Clearly no consensus on this! |
Same thing here. |
OP, the majority is saying no. |
|
But now one is saying WHEN to go back. What day of symptoms?
Symptom-free could easily be March, so that won’t work. So when??? NP btw |
Op here - would echo this. The 8 day from symptom onset poster was most helpful in this regard. |
…you literally admitted that your kid just tested positive today. I could/would not in good conscience send this kid to daycare and you can’t either - most people here agree. This virus kills babies |
| Rsv killed my friends four month old. Please keep your kid home! |
