I have nothing against young people who work in restaurants BUT.....

Many restaurants are offering freebies for military/former military today, tomorrow and on Monday.
When I call the restaurants to confirm (I do not want to waste gas) the workers answering the phone have no idea what I am talking about.

Is this the fault of management or the employee?

Am I just old and out of touch?

What do you think? How is an employee (young or old) supposed to know what specials/discounts are being offered if management does not tell them?

Management, OP. The workers were not told. Otherwise they would answer your question.

Duh.

Of course it’s management. Ask to speak to the manager.

This has absolutely nothing to do with age and everything to do with communication.

Veterans day is not exactly a secret. It is well known.

But not the fact that Veterans might receive a discount in certain locations. I don't know that. I wouldn't expect any server to know this either, unless management announced it. And not to put too fine a point on it, but if you call and receive crickets, it means there's no discount or gift.

Did you somehow come to expect a monetary advantage on Veteran's Day, OP?

It's not well known everywhere. There are areas where very few people go into the military, so very few people known anyone in it, and thus are not paying attention to holidays that have antyhing to do with it.

Phone calls?! Check the restaurant's website or social media. Don't tie people up with phone calls.

Young people are generally clueless and not very responsible. It’s true but what can you do?

Management. If they don't clearly communicate information, how are the employees supposed to know?

Pretty much every place make you work for the "freebies" on veterans day. It's a total shame and I think they do it for the pr only and not because they care. They treat your like a begger when you try to take them up on their own offers.terrible.

Maybe, but those areas are not the DC area where we have a ton of active and retired veterans, up to and including very high ranking stature

Sure, maybe…but those people aren’t calling around trying to find which restaurants they can get a discount at
