How do you think this can end? Are you for a 2 state solution? What are your thoughts on Hamas? Have you read the Hamas charter? How do you think Israel should be handing this? If you feel Hamas must be destroyed, but Israel is going too far, then what do you propose? If you feel Hamas should stay, why? |
Bring back the Ottoman Empire. |
One state- right to return, one person one vote, no duel citizenship. If not that let Turkey take over the area. We will have to pay the Turks. Maybe 1/2 of what we give Israel and Egypt. |
Thanks for creating this thread. So tired of terror apologists who suggest that Israel accept terror attackers.
A two state solution seems to make sense, but many believe that is not viable. Can someone explain why? |
I’ve supported a two state solution all my life. It doesn’t look like many Palestinians want that and although many Israelis used to want it, it is becoming less popular there too. So I don’t know! I don’t really understand the one state solution proposed by PP above, perhaps s/he can come back and explain some of it. For example, what will the right of return mean and who will it apply to? What will it mean for the current residents of the areas in question? |
As far as I can tell, those who think two state is no longer viable think so because because it would require all the West Bank Israeli settlers to relocate to Israel proper. I think they number around 700,00. Not impossible, but difficult. I would think that for many Israelis this would be preferable to one state, one vote. I do agree with a PP that if one state were the solution, dual citizenship would have to be prohibited. Dual citizenship would give the one-state citizen a safety net so they would be less invested in making the one state work. |
My take: Both have a legitimate claim to the area but neither seems to want to give that up to the other side. Israel probably has a better shot of administering the region as a one-state solution than to continue on a contentious path. They need to integrate the Arab Palestinians, give them right to return, give them citizenship, focus on housing and a robust economy. But part of it would also need to be that those returning agree to reject the extremism that gave rise to Hamas and Islamic Jihad. There also needs to be a broader regional effort, to get the Palestinians, some of whom have been stateless since 1948, integrated into society where they exist - Jordan, Egypt, etc. With similar clauses of renouncing extremism. |

It's always been the two state solution. But both sides have to believe in it.
Why is it the only option? A one state democracy can't be a Jewish state because Palestinians will equal or outnumber them. A one state solution without full democracy is Apartheid. Therefore the two state solution is all that is left. Neither Netanyahu nor Hamas believes in it. We were making progress with the Oslo Accords and its opponents ruined it. Right wingers assassinated Yitzak Rabin and then they deliberately weakened Arafat and Fatah. Netanyahu liked Hamas because nobody could force him to negotiate with Hamas. |
This accurately summarized the issue in 200 words. Bravo. In other words, the solution to the problem is to eliminate the extremists - both Likud and Hamas. They need to be cut out of the equation and then crushed. |
Could the resolution of The Troubles in Ireland be a helpful case study? It also involved territory, religion, British imperialism, terrorist groups and tactics mixes with regular armies and government, etc. |
Netanyahu is highly unlikely to survive as PM for much longer, he is deeply unpopular and many Israelis blame him for what happened nearly as much as Hamas (not for actually making the attacks happen but for being a terrible leader and not focusing on the security of the country). So he will go, and hopefully he will be replaced by someone more moderate. I don’t think it’s fair to suggest that Hamas and Likud are equivalent, but if they are both out of the picture then there might be some progress. I don’t know, though, because we have been here before and so far I don’t think there has been a leader on the Palestinian side who has ever accepted 2 states. |
Jewish Dem here. I'd propose some kind of UN-governed independent state. |
Ok so let's say Israel gets a new moderate leader and we want to move to a 2 state solution. How does the existence of Hamas factor into this. If they must be eliminated, how do you propose this is done if they use Palestinians as human shields and don't allow them to leave?

Also, if so many people favor a 2 state solution why is "From the river to the sea" becoming a cliche chant that everyone must have at their Pro-Palestinian protests. That is about wiping out Israel completely. |
