Advice on getting services for child new to FCPS?

| We are going to enroll DC in public school starting in Jan (first grade) and I'm looking for advice on how to navigate this as it relates to levels 2, 3, 4. So far I only have outsider knowledge. DC has been in private preschools/schools til now. Any advice on how to ensure DC gets needed services right away? DC is a fluent reader and advanced in math. |

In the middle of the school year in 1st grade, your DC will be finding their footing, learning the class and school, and meeting the other children and making friends.
In second grade, they may be selected for Level II and in third grade, they may be selected for Level III or Level IV. For now, focus on the move and meeting new friends. |

| Which elementary school? If it is a high SES one, you may find your child is in the middle of the pack. |

My child received Level II services in first grade, but honestly it's just an extra math worksheet or extra reading group every once in a while. If your child is advanced, they'll be getting this whether they are designated LII or not. |

| Depending on your school, there may not be pullouts at that age. Our center school has the AART come once a month to give the entire class a lesson. The teacher may also have differentiated reading and math groups. |

You’re enrolling a 1st grader as well? AAP doesn't start until 3rd so your child will go through the process on the same timeline as kids who haven’t transferred in. If you want them to be considered for “level II services” in 1st and 2nd, contact the AART and fill out a local referral form w the rest of your paperwork. Level II will basically get them an extra worksheet a week. It’s really not a service or anything advanced, but at least you’ll be able to check the box that they’re receiving advanced work on the referral form for AAP in 2nd grade. |

We've been in FCPS since K frankly we just let the school tell us what service our kids needed. Nothing you need to do that really mattered before 3rd grade.
There is a NNAT test for 1st grader, if your kid missed it, you can request a one time re-test, just talk to your AART for details. |
