My DD is trying out. She's 9th grade and has AAU experience. She was middle of the pack for her team. She wants to make the Varsity team. Will that be possible? She hasn't received any indication from the coaches during the pre-season workouts. Do freshmen usually know beforehand if they'll get asked to play Varsity?

it depends on the school.

our HS it is very competitive to even make the freshman team. Kids will be divided up the second or third day of tryouts

Even on the girl end? I know for boys it's competitive.

It depends on the school. Madison girls is going to be as hard to make as any team for any sport for either gender. Others will be relatively easy

Do freshmen getting on Varsity usually have indication before tryouts?

Why is she so anxious to get on varsity as a freshman? There is time for that in the future.

Did she play in the Fall League? It's usually a pretty good indicator (but not foolproof) whether she played in the V or JV games. Has she been to any Green Days?

A freshman usuallly has to be pretty amazing to make varsity.
Whats wrong with playing JV or freshman?

Freshman is really bad. JV has a good chance of eventually making varsity

Nothing is wrong. She was curious about her prospects, that's all. And as a family we were wondering how things worked for those Freshmen making Varsity.

+1

I would think your kid would need to be a standout on their AAU team to make varsity, but it is very school specific.

I would agree, it's tough. In our 3 years (so far) I think have seen 2 freshmen make our varsity. Likely one will this year.

I think Woodson is also hard to make for girls. There are only 12 slots on each team and I don't see any freshman on the varsity roster from last year.

At many schools in the boys side it is tough to even make the freshman team.

OP, when she did fall league and green days, was she grouped with the older group or younger group?

She had a fall sport so only went sporadically.
