Whoa FCPS- data breach

Just what you’d expect under incompetent Michelle Reid and the equally incompetent School Board that hired her.

As a lawyer who has some familiarity with large companies and their data security, I find it laughable that people expect a school district to have similar security. If they set aside the budget for that, everyone would be furious. That's not what school administration is for, it's not what we want them to be skilled experts in.

Someone in FCP screwed up big time, but this woman is unbelievable. She kept reading, kept the files, and decided she was the arbiter of how to handle this:

"Oettinger said she didn’t report the leak to district officials because she doesn’t trust them "

Come on. From another parent: “Some of the information I found out about other people’s children I don’t want to know,” said Melear, the parent who relocated to Denver."

This woman is almost just as bad as FCPS...sharing the documents!

I applaud her. I have a kid with an IEP and no one has told me that his data has been leaked. I have a meeting at the high school today- wonder if they will mention this?

Also, she has my kids information but more concerning- who else does? At least she is doing something about it. She has absolutely no reason to trust FCPS. I am sure they are going to try and blame her for their stupidity.

Why do they have all this information in a shareable file (probably excel?). They have a system that stores all the information- isn’t it called SeStars or something like that- they pull it up at every IEP meeting and type into it.

Callie Oettinger wants FCPS to get in trouble and is constantly looking for trouble.

you are wrong. As if a month or two ago, Reid’s duties includes overseeing school safety and security.

+1

In a trust system, a distrustful person can wreak havoc.

FCPS is constantly doing things that are troublesome! I am glad someone is watching the store- clean up in Aisle 6 needed right now.

How did she get this data? Why is it being released so easily? And multiple times?

She makes constant FOIA requests. Some of those get messed up and she gets the wrong data.

According to the article, she got the data because it was included as part of her children's education record (which makes no sense).

"Oettinger, a parent and special education advocate with a long and contentious relationship with Fairfax administrators, went to a school on three consecutive days last month to examine her children’s files — data such as test scores, attendance records and audio recordings of meetings she’s been requesting for years. In addition to boxes of paper files, the district provided her with thumb drives and computer discs that Oettinger estimates include personal data on roughly 35,000 students."

And a normal person would put aside files not intended for her. Oettinger? She publishes them.

Great advocacy...
