I know the recommendation is to get a car, but we both hate driving and don't want to deal with it on vacation, so we'll be relying on taxis/cars while we're there. Our boutique hotel is quoting us $80 each way to/from the hotel (10 minute drive) and $50 each way to get to/from Grace Bay (actually further than the hotel, 15 min drive). These prices seem totally absurd, but I know we are going to pay a premium to not drive ourselves. Are these prices crazy, and if so, any recommendations on a car service? |
Turks and Caicos is expensive, especially Providenciales. This is partly why we rented a car (we're not big drinkers, so it wasn't an issue to drive to dinner and back).
$50 for a 10 minute drive sounds about right. I remember hearing that a lot when we were there from other guests and feeling glad we'd rented a car. That said, we stayed at a hotel that was kind of marooned on the other side of Grace Bay and not walkable to anything. So we left 1-2 times a day to do stuff and eat. If you're at Beaches or a mega-resort you'll leave less. |
Also remember hotels charge a lot more than other methods. GOogle around or ask the tourism bureau and maybe you can find a local company to drive you. |
No those prices are not unreasonable for Provo. You’d be better off just renting a car unless you don’t plan to leave the resort at all. |
OP here. I know hotels often charge more than others - was hoping for some recs of reputable services on here if that's the case! |
Believe what you are reading. It is not that hospitable a place, between resorts. You need to take cabs. They know that and charge accordingly. |
If you like your first driver, ask if he’d drive you later and how much he charges. I’ve done this every time. He’ll probably have a card and be willing to do a better rate. |
Depending on your hotel lots of places are walkable. |
Taxis are very expensive. They also charge per person in comparison to other islands like the Cayman Islands, Aruba, etc. Private taxis are slightly cheaper; we found a driver toward the end of our stay and we’re able to negotiate with him a little.
If you’re staying in Grace Bay you should be able to walk to most dining, etc. You may have to drive to get to the rum distillery, museums, etc |
Get the car. I have yet to go to a Caribbean Island where a taxi made sense. Many charge per person too, it adds up. And then you have the issue of walking around with a lot of cash. |
Oh wow. Rent a car. And stay on Grace Bay. |
Rented a car. Loved driving around. Worth the cost. |
What do you mean it’s not hospitable? I found it that way. |
When we went way back in 2010, there were these white van taxis that drove people around in groups and it was super cheap. Drivers also gave out cell numbers. I swear it was like $6pp to go from our hotel on Grace Bay to dinner at Coco Bistro. Are the white taxi vans gone? |
Most things have increased in price since 2010… In my experience in Provo and other islands, one round trip in a taxi is typically the cost of one day of car rental. |
