Hi! My high school son who plays on his school team is hoping to make the jump from MSI to a Mont. Co. club team. I'm having a hard time understanding the differences between teams even after reading a few old threads.
I'm not assuming he'll make any of these, but what's the difference between Bethesda MLS Next and Bethesda Blue and Bethesda Green for 2007 boys? He's also interested in Potomac, PPA or the Olney Boys and Girls Club (the name might be Revolution, if I recall correctly). There seem to be different teams within some of those clubs as well. My head is swimming. I know it's hard to generalize but which teams are for kids who are pushing to play college soccer? Are there some that are more for kids hoping to develop their skills for high school soccer but most don't want the pressure of playing in soccer? (My kid seems more in that camp). Thanks! |
| What is lacking with his existing MSI team? Competitiveness? |
| MSI Rec? |
| Is he at a private school or one of the big McPS high schools? If hes a a public bigh school and made the team without already playing club level, color me impressed. He should talk to the boys on his team. |
| I personally love his MSI classic team and his coach is so nice but several of his friends have left for travel teams (many in Baltimore, which is too far for us) and he's under the impression that for his particular situation, he'd get more of a challenge elsewhere. |
| MSI expanded their travel teams this year and are holding tryouts for Spring - why not start there (and maybe bring a friend from his Classic team)? It'll cost a lot less and will be more competitive |
Yeah but to say this route would work to play even D3 is to give our anonymous friend a false sense of the landscape. If you want to play in college - ECNL is the answer. The only ECNL team in Moco is Potomac. Good luck but I think the real issue with your son may be speed of play at this level. It is fast and furious. |
| We we on PPA and do not like it. Expensive, very disorganized and not much instruction. |

The top BSC Boys’ team is MLSNext. The top team for Potomac Boys’ team is ECNL Boys.
MSI also has travel but on the same level as the above-mentioned. This site is a good reference for team rankings but should not be used as gospel: https://home.gotsoccer.com/rankings/results.aspx?Level=National&Country=USA&Gender=Boys&Age=17&state=MD&search=&pos= |
+1 The old director of MSI was a horrible person and let some coaches abuse players and take advantage of families which resulted in terrible travel teams. There were some good individual coaches. The new director seems great and is really revamping the travel program. I would check that out. |
| You should have him try out for everything you listed and come back to this forum with specific team offers and people can advise then. |
^This if your son wants to play in college (D3) or even on top teams in this region while in HS, he's going to need speed and quickness on the ball. |
You are really late in the game to try and catch up with the top teams. You should email the coaches and request a tryout. I would bet that in order to make the top team or second team you need to be better than most of the team or bring something that the others don't have. I bet all the teams are already full. |
MSI is like a “new” and “different” club now with the new CEO/Technical Director. Their focus now is developing their travel program with MSI-employed coaches. |
Why is ECNL "the answer"? (on the boys side) Which college coaches are looking past MLS Next teams to ECNL teams? |
