There have been threads about it but this one can apply to both Ds and Rs.
The political establishment is lining up behind Alsobrooks, but Trone has all the money. Both are politically moderate Democrats. I personally think Maryland could do better. I’m not far left by any means, but since national politics has been driven so far to the right, I’d rather see blue states like Maryland counterbalance that with someone more left-leaning. I wish Raskin would run. I’m leaning towards Angela admittedly for identity politics reasons. When all other things are equal (in this case, equally mid) I’ll vote for the women of color. This all being said, what are the chances for the R candidates? The only one I know is Robin Ficker. He never ceases to entertain, I look forward to his presidential campaign kickoff in 2028. But what about the serious Republican candidates? Since Larry Hogan isn’t running, does anyone other than a clone named Harry Logan have a chance? Could Rs peel off enough young Black men to flip Maryland? |

Hogan is the strongest R candidate, followed by Boyd Rutherford, but I believe neither plan to run. That means it'll be between Trone and Alsobrooks. I'll choose Trone since I like his business acumen and I don't vote for candidates based on being POC or not.
But I'm also an independent so I can't choose in the closed primaries we have in MD anywayy... |
If you register as a Democrat you can choose. I know many independents and Republicans in DC and MD who do this because the real election is usually before November. |
Then choose a party and register with it. It's very easy to do online. I have no idea why anyone would literally want NO vote in any primary. Look at the elections in Montgomery County for council and county executive. It's based on the Democratic primary. ~ Former Independent |
What does this even mean? You're like a caricature of the extreme left with this. |
It means that if both candidates are equally good or bad, then I’ll resort to identity politics if there are no other distinguishing factors. |
| Alsobrooks seems fine, I don't know much about her. I'm planning to vote for Trone. He's done a lot of good work in the areas of mental health and substance use. |
It’s hard to believe that there are truly no distinguishing factors regarding their policy positions. |
Actually, not a lot. I think he's a good guy and we will be fine with either one of them. She is probably more conservative than Trone. I am fine with identity politics. Given that both would be great, I'll choose the woman. |

Anyone voting for a Republican is dumb.
Sure let’s vote for the pedo party (yep another one arrested today for wanting to rape a minor)insurrectionist party, party of Putin, party that will make a full on no birth control ban creeping up to women can not leave the state party. Women in particular if you vote Republican you risk hospital care doctors leaving the state I’m sorry if you idiots can not see who they are and what they are doing, And for gods sake you are at risk of losing all freedom voting for the Putin party is genius not yo mention it gets closer to giving Trump nuclear codes omg Don’t tell me I am over reacting. We live in the United States of America clearly the Republican Party does not believe in the constitution who votes for that? |
| There is no way the Dem party will let Trone win. How embarrassing on the national stage for them to have two white men as Senators. They are too much about “identity politics,” as our friend the PP espouses. |
| Women of color who are progressives tend to be antisemitic so no. I am voting Trone all the way. We need to get the progressives out of congress. They are destroying our society. |
They have had two white men as senators for the past 6 years. |

Alsobrooks is pretty trustworthy with her identity and politics.
Trone, not so much. As everyone knows, Trone is a businessman, through and through. Prior to entering politics, he had been a fairweather Democrat. He spent a lot of money buying, hosting, and supporting Republican candidates in MD and around the country when they influenced his business decisions. For example, when Pennsylvania and Massachusetts were trying to restrict his liquor licenses for his alcohol distribution businesses, he invested heavily into Republican candidates to try and get them elected so that they would pass and change laws that would allow him to take advantage of low income customers. He donated a significant amount of money to the campaigns of Texas' Greg Abbott and Dan Patrick, also North Carolina's Pat McCrory, all of whom are pretty soulless ultra-conservative Republicans. Even as recently as the 2020 and 2022 elections, he has made significant campaign contributions to conservative Wisconsin state candidates in order to again win advantages for his wine and liquor empire. He's committed numerous business crimes in the state of Pennsylvania, but was very fortunate not to be convicted or imprisoned due to an error by the ATF which caused his case to be tossed out of court. He also tried to get other heavily business oriented laws passed. He was never a supporter of the poor and working classes until he became a politician himself. And since he was a Montgomery County candidate, he changed his politics to be self-serving and support the voters that he was trying to cater to, so he started supporting a lot of socially liberal causes. But he's just an opportunist. And there is no guarantee from his personal history that today's political platform will stay his political platform. If the opportunity to run elsewhere cropped up and it served his personal interests to become a Republican and support Republican causes, there's no guarantee that he wouldn't just jump ship and do what was best for him personally. As a rich, white businessman, he has no particular need to back minority issues, whether race, creed, gender, sexuality, low socio-economic status, etc. As the saying goes, he has no skin in the game, so he can quit the game at any time. Alsobrooks has been consistent in her politics and policies and as a black woman, she is invested in the causes that she supports. She has to be. She's a single mother, so the plight of women, lower income and minorities has personal meaning and impact on her. David Trone is not very trustworthy as a candidate and MD doesn't need that type of opportunist in the Senate. |
| I don’t particularly care for Trone or Alsobrooks. When I was a Trone constituent I never got a response to an email or phone message, ever. Tried to get a white house tour. Crickets. Redistributed to Raskins district and got my preferred date of tour for my kiddo within weeks. Wish we had better options. |
