My husband will be coaching basketball and won’t be home until 8pm M, T, W, F. Last week was the first week and dinners were a disaster. Obviously my kids need to eat before 8pm, but I’m having a hard time keeping things warm for DH without them drying out or turning to mush. I know I’m doing something wrong! I also don’t want to cook just casserole-type dishes until the season is over.
So help me, DCUM! What is the best approach here? |
| Just plate his piping hot and cover with foil, refrigerate. When he gets home, he pops it in the microwave. It’ll retain enough moisture to reheat nicely. |
| Do you ever eat leftovers? He can just eat them as leftovers. |
| What does he do for lunch? He should eat a bigger lunch and have a light dinner (sandwich, etc). That’s healthier anyway. |
| I am so confused by this post. I'd cook as normal and let him reheat his food when he got home. |
OP here. I guess I’m the most confused of all! I’ve been trying to keep our dinner warm for him! |
| wife of a football coach here with two under five. My kids need to eat around 5:15, he doesn't get home until around 7:15. I just leave it in the pan, on the original burner, with a lid on it. most of the time it's warm, sometimes he has to heat it up. no offense, but he is an adult and since I'm balancing two kids and dinner/baths on my own, making his dinner is at the bottom of my priority list. worst case scenario, he can make a sandwich |
When the kids are teens, it's so hard to have dinner all together. You'll get the hang of it! Just cook what you want and he can figure out how he wants to eat it

| Cook what you want. Put leftovers in the fridge. When he gets home he can fix a plate, make a sandwich, pull out a frozen dinner, etc. With microwaves it’s really not a problem for an adult to feed themselves as long as there’s food around. |
+100 why is this a post??? |
Why does it have to be kept warm? He’s a big boy. |
| Stop keeping dinner warn. Make dinner, eat it, pack away the leftovers and when he gets home he can reheat them. |
| My Dad worked late every night. My mom made him up a plate that he microwaved when he got home. |
| Wow, it would not occur to me to worry about this at all. He can eat leftovers, make himself a sandwich, eat cereal, eat a microwavable meal, whatever, when he comes home. In fact, now that my kids are teens, we basically eat at all different times anyway. I make one meal and people just eat it when they can or find themselves something else they want to eat. |
It's not 1950 lady. |
