I've been coloring my hair for over a year using Madison Reed's at-home product. I do it every 1.5-2 months or so to cover greys and have never had an adverse reaction. However, this last time, my scalp felt itchy the next day, and I felt like there were areas on my scalp that felt kind of...swollen/bumpy? I assumed it was from the hair dye although it's weird that I felt totally fine using it so many times.
Has this happened to anyone who has used hair dye? I'm wondering if I should just use the same product one more time in a couple of months and see if the same thing happens, or if it's not worth the risk of an even worse reaction next time. I've otherwise been very satisfied with the product. (And yes I know there are lawsuits against Madison Reed by people claiming that it caused them to lose hair. That hasn't happened to me (yet...)). |

Yep, unfortunately with allergies they can pop up all of a sudden like this. It happens to me as well when I use hair dye. Madison Reed is actually the only one I can use.
I would call MR and let them investigate to see if anything different was done for the lot number of the box you used. |
| Yes this happened to my MIL and she had to stop dying her hair. |
| You might not have washed it all off. |
| The only dye I can use without getting an itchy scalp is Nice & Easy. Just try a different brand. |
| Look at google images of "hair dye allergic reaction" and decide. |
OP here - just did that and no, my face did not get swollen. Nothing looks different but my scalp is just itchy/irritated feeling. Thanks all! |
| I have been dealing with this for almost a year. Never assumed it was from MR bc I’ve used it way longer. I’ve switched out shampoos. Ive talked to my hair stylist. And nothing has helped. I thought maybe it’s bc I wear a lot of hats, have a lot of thick hair and I sweat, so I thought maybe that was causing it. Nope. Nothing else has changed so I’m wondering if all of a sudden I’m allergic to the hair color? I’m over it. Guess I’ll switch it up and see if that helps. |
If it is itching consistently and not just on the day of/few days past dying, then it’s not likely the hair dye. It’s probably a fungus you have on your scalp or eczema/psoraisis. However, if you are getting the itchiness when it is on your scalp and/or in the day or two after application then it’s most likely due to the dye. Madison Reed is actually one of the more gentle brands. There are some other lines out there that also have few ingredients that cause people to react so you may want to look into them. There’s another trick that if you put sweet and low mixed with a dye, it makes it less reactive to your scalp. Sounds weird, but some people swear by it… My family owns a hair salon for what it’s worth. A few ladies come in with their own sweet and low packs lol |
| ^ try to use Nizoral on your scalp for a month to see if that helps. Sounds like you could have an unhealthy scalp due to the sweating/hat usage. |
Yes, I have allergies to the dye, too. Makes. me itch for a couple of washes. My hairdresser puts sweet n low packets in my dye and, for whatever reason, it helps with the itching. |
This. Wash better next time. |
| Rinse it for a very very long time after. It helps. |

Mine does this sometimes - mostly when I shampoo my hair a few hrs prior to dying my hair.
Shampooing the day before helped. |
| A wig will solve your problems. |
