Here is the clarification on the Bo the dog 'scandal'. Sounds reasonable I guess--though I do expect presidential travel (regardless of who is president) to take into consideration carbon-footprint and our abysmal economy. My question is, could they all have fit in one plane? Seems like that would have been the most cost/energy-saving. Anyone know? I'm genuinely curious about whether it was a reasonable choice or a bit 'off'.
"Clarification: Today's story about the arrival of the Obamas said the Obama's dog and one aide arrived on a small jet before the First Family, but there were other occupants on the plane, including several other staffers. The presidential party took two small jets to the Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport in Trenton because the airport was too small to accommodate the president's usual jet." http://www.onlinesentinel.com/news/white-house-wanderers-tour-acadia_2010-07-16.html |
My guess is that they needed two planes regardless, because of the size of the entourage and the size of the airport and they put the dog on the first one. I'm all for calling out governmental waste and how our president travels, in general, is pretty wasteful but it seems like this is just a matter of exaggerating a headline-grabbing anecdote, implying the dog flew all by himself. |
Thanks for your response. I guess I can agree--unless they could all fit in one plane. I guess that's my question. If the scenario is what you describe--fine. If not, possibly wasteful. Obviously I don't think the Pres personally makes travel arrangements, but again and again his aides (who he is responsible for) seem to make careless decisions--both with regard to true thoughtlessness and the 'appearance' of thoughtlessness/tone-deafness. It's up to them to attend to both the content and image of this White House's decisions. Moments like the NY flyover, the gift to England, vacationing in Maine versus on the Gulf, and this 'doggie flight' all land in their laps. Don't want to be hysterical--just curious whether they could have used one plane, whether one would have been cheaper than two (maybe not?), and whether they were being skillful or inept in their planning. |
There certainly have been gaffes, but in the big picture, I don't know how worth talking about they are. First, this is hardly out of the ordinary for Presidents. And, secondly, Obama has done a lot more that is deserving of criticism than this. |
During World War II a story circulated that FDR sent a battleship to retrieve his Scottish Terrier, "Fala." FDR responded that Fala's "Scottish" heritage would make his (Fala's ) blood boil at even the suggestion of such extravagance. The dog is a part of the family. Who gives a damn. It's just smoke and mirrors. |
What's your problem, Sarah --err, I mean OP? In my view, all dogs should get their jet, or at least fly first class. They deserve it much more than most people do. Particularly those who want to use planes for the purpose of shooting their cousins and hanging their heads on the wall. How come you don't seem concerned about the "footprint", environmental impact of that? Not to mention the profound cruelty.
So yeah. A private jet for every dog, and Pelligrino in all their bowls. Love me some Obama. |
I don't think Obama walks on water, but it's ridiculous that he's getting so much flack for WEEKEND getaways. These are hardly vacations ... that's but the GOP mudslingers are calling them. |
It's funny that the typical response brought up to ANY questioning of Obama is: "how come you don't seem so concerned about... ____________________ fill in blank". Maybe I am concerned about THAT. But THIS is what's under discussion. If you have valid comparisons to draw, draw them. The Fala the Dog was applicable and interesting. |
The point is that you're not concerned about anything important, Sarah. You are concerned with only two things: 1. Shitting on Obama, even if for only that you don't like the way he breathes, and 2. Yourself. |
You are mistaken. Obama walks on water. |
It must be nice to be so smug! Enjoy! ![]() |
Have you seen the way presidents travel? It hardly matters whether there is one plane or two. That is the least of the expense. |
Whenever Bo has to travel separately, they say "Mr. Bo dangles". |
Reagan, Bush I and Bush II were always criticized for their "vacations". I thought it was ridiculous then and I think it ridiculous now. But the fact is that there is a double standard on this as so many issues. Those pointing out the dog issue are merely holding Obama to the standard that the Left created for some of his predicessors: "Mr. President, how can you X when so many Americans are Y (ing)?" X=Golf Y=Die X=Fish Y=Hungry X=Sleep Y=Out of Work I'm sure he works hard. I'm sure he needs to recharge his battery. Too bad, his comrads couldn't give his predicessors the same slack. |
