I am always hearing from certain friends to get baby stuff used but the idea makes me sorta nervous or uncomfortable for some things but I want a gut check.
I would not buy stuff where safety is key used - i.e., car seat, bassinet, crib etc. Then I would not buy stuff that goes in my baby’s mouth used - bottles, certain toys. So I guess what - clothing? Certain books / toys? What else? And where have you gotten good stuff in the DC area? Thank you! |
| Get everything used if you can, excepting car seat. Bassinet - for sure. There’s no issue. Bottles, toys, etc. can all easily be sanitized. You’d want to wash them first after buying new anyway. They grow so incredibly fast in the early years that most of the clothes I had for each stage were only worn a couple times. Save your wallet and the planet and buy everything used but a car seat and perhaps quality shoes once they’re walking. |
What? Of course you can get a bassinet and crib used. That’s ridiculous to think you can’t. That’s all I used for my two kids. You should absolutely get used strollers. And a pack & play. A baby bath tub for the sink. And a high chair (which you won’t need for several months). You can get a used glider. |
Everything you can! There is so, so much used baby stuff out there, and it’s by nature not heavily used (in general) because babyhood is so short! (Sadly.) for our most recent baby we got a pack n play and a high chair from family - I think we are the third family to use them but it’s fine by me! |
| Go to one of the wee sale consignment events. |
There’s no safety issue with reusing a crib- (unless you’re talking about some kind of ancient/recalled model) even if it’s understandable to want to get a new one. Strollers are a great option to buy used also: swings, baby monitors, walkers/bouncers/play stations, baby carriers, and definitely clothes |
| Short lived Baby equipment like the rockers and bouncers |

Everything can be used. I do agree with you on stuff that goes in the mouth though.
If you happen to have a friend/neighbor that’s done with a car seat and you know it’s never been in an accident you can use that too. That’s a personal preference. Anything big I would get used, swing, bouncy seat, baby bathtub, stroller etc….. our crib was used as was our pack n play. |
| Secondipity is a good store to look at for baby gear - open box, dented box, new in box |
| Cribs and bassinets are fine used—just replace the mattress. Basically the only thing you absolutely cannot buy used is a car seat, though I agree with your preference for new bottles and pacifiers. |
Bottles are totally fine, just replace the nipples. |

There is no reason at all to buy used baby stuff. Think of it, do you buy used clothing, used furniture, used cars? Then why would you treat your new family member any differently?
Also people can be so weird and precious about their used baby stuff, charging almost as much as new🙄. Or it becomes this icky competition to spend as little as possible on the baby like is a badge of honor🤮 it is ok to take joy in buying all the lovely baby things new 🤗 |
There is no reason you can “ absolutely not buy a used car seat “ I wouldn’t buy one from a stranger. But if you know someone who’s selling one or giving one away and it’s still good, no accidents etc there’s nothing wrong with it. We bought a brand new bucket seat and my kid was only in it for 5 mos and we switched to a convertible. I sold it for less than half what I paid; it was like new still. |

I didn’t buy anything new. It was all handmedowns. Cribs, car seats, clothes, breast pump. I guess we bought a few bottles as we needed them. If I needed good mittens or boots I bought those new.
Looking back I am so glad I didn’t waste my money on baby and toddler stuff that’s used for a blink of an eye. |
Yes I do! There is no need to buy new and create more landfill waste. |
