College kid being controlled and financially exploited by parents- options?

Anonymous
I know a college student in a bad situation and I’m looking for the best advice to offer.

This kid is in college (commuting from home), paid for by grandparents. Parents are verbally and emotionally abusive (intentionally degrading this kid to the point of near suicide on a regular basis). Parents are also doing sketchy financial stuff. Opened several credit cards in this kids name without permission or knowledge and are using them. Regularly take large sums money out of the bank account that this kids paychecks go into. This kid has never been allowed access to their social security number. Parents filed all school and work forms and maintain complete control over everything despite the kids best attempts.

Kid doesn’t want to lose college funding or all contact with parents…but this is getting extreme and wants to not have a financial mess on their hands, but can’t open a new bank account without their social security number.

Does this kid have any easy options?
Any way to get their ss# and make a smooth-ish exit to adulthood?

He can dispute the accounts on his credit report.

This is drastic but if he joins the military, they will do the legwork of tracking down his SSN. They will also pay for his college and make it so he can be completely independent.

OP here.
Can’t get a credit report without a social
And the military isn’t ideal because this kid is female

Does she have a drivers license?

Go to the college. Won't they have her SSN? Or the bank where her joint account is? Or the DMV?

Lots of females in the military. This seems like one of the better options.

Mind your own business OP. What are you, a stalker?

Who are you and why do you have all of this personal information?

Go to the post office and pay for a PO Box to get mail delivered there.
She can easily get social security number by:
Visit a social security office with an id like a drivers license and ask for the number. Or have replace the card sent to P.O. Box.
Or
Go to bank and explain situation and ask for copies of documents used to open the account.
Or
Go to college and ask for copies of fafsa. Explain to college financial aid office what is happening and ask for ssn.

Over 18? Does she have access to other personal identification documents like birth certificate? Passport?
If so she can go to a SS office and request a new card.
She can have it mailed to any address she puts on the form.
The registrar’s office is probably the easist place to ask for help though. They should have her information and if she is over 18 they should have no problem giving it to her.

Colleges will ONLY deal with the student if student over 18. Will only deal with the parents if student signs a proxy allowing it. School should have no problem sharing the SS number.

How do you leave out the kid's age? Large sums? The kid can rent a room somewhere if they have large sums from.
They can dump the parents, get all their own documents without parents and file police report about the credit cards opened.
If it all is true, the credit will be wiped clean.
OP, you sound just as clueless as the the student. I arrived here at 18 with ok English skills, got my DL in a week, SS number, and went to school all while not a resident and later as an illegal immigrant.
I have every document a person ever needs and filled out many FAFSAs once I became legal. All is just paperwork and a little bit of effort.
