How do middle school conferences typically work?

Anonymous
The school keeps sending vague emails about “by appointment only” in-person parent teacher conferences. How does this typically work when the child has six teachers?

Is it like high school where you show up in a time slot and just queue outside of each teacher’s classroom and wait your turn? Or will we be making six separate appointments?

Depends on the school, so I'd ask them.

You don’t meet with all the teachers unless you have a reason to meet with the teacher. Reasons (as I see it) is your kid is not doing well in the class.

Our school offers the option to have a conference with their homeroom teacher if you want one and that would be more over-arching social emotional type of feedback.

I did, they said to watch for more info. I’m just trying to get a sampling so I have an idea of how it may go. I have to take time off work.

I have no reason, but feel I need to go? Do parents not attend?

Our middle school uses team teaching, and last year they offered us 20 minute slots to meet with the 4 core subject teachers. PE and elective teachers also offered slots.

This year they had each teacher offer individual 10 minute slots. I couldn't make back to school night this year, so I went and met her core subject teachers (her elective teachers were the same as last year so I had already met them and she has As in both classes so I skipped.)

In spring they strongly encouraged only doing conferences if you had specific concerns or your kids had low grades. So I skipped those last year.

Two kids in MS, 8th & 6th. We haven't had one yet.

You only have them "if necessary". It's only if your child is struggling or falling behind or behaving poorly.

This isn't like ES when you "get to know the teacher"

If your kid is doing well, I would not expect to have any conferences

At my kid’s middle school they have conferences in the fall and in the spring. They are asked to lead the conference and present on their goals, strengths and any areas they would like to improve. Parents ask questions at the end.

Group parent-teacher conferences? That’s a new one.

It's a huge waste of time if your child is doing well and thriving. I always email the teachers and ask if they feel one is necessary for my child. She's a straight A student and they always tell me she's wonderful, that she's a pleasure to have in class and a conference isn't needed.

I think you can always receive valuable feedback about your kid. Mine ya a strait A student and I still want to know how she's doing. Weaknesses and strengths. You do not know if that wonderful kid may suddenly change up and I want to know what's up because nothing is guaranteed in this life and my kid is too important to blow off.

Parent led conferences are great because it goes beyond grades. It's private schools offering this I believe.

I'm confused how you think it won't be by appointment.

My kids' high school, and the high school I teach at both don't do it the way you describe with queuing up. That seems specific to that particular school.
