You meet a black Ivy League grad - what are you secretly thinking to yourself?

My guess is the first thing that comes to mind is Affirmative Action.

I hate this. Yet another reason to get rid of this notion.

Black people need affirmative action, because even after a black president they don't feel they have the tools compete in this global world. THey need handouts.

My first thought? "I wonder if we were there at the same time?"

Perhaps another recurring theme - I still would not want to be you.

I dated a black ivy league grad and was bitter that I paid student loans and he didn't, despite the fact that my credentials were better.

When I read the thread title I didn't get it. I thought "what am I supposed to be thinking? A black person who graduated from an Ivy League school... and?"

Some white people have an obsession with affirmative action and thinking minorities are getting over on them. In high school around the time college acceptance letters were mailed out, many Caucasian students in my honors and AP classes would bitch about how it wasn't fair that minorities got into X school and they didn't and blame affirmative action.

The complainers were always stupid people who wouldn't have gotten into the school even if it had a 0% minority population.

Stop being obsessed with minorities. What a terrible problem to have, to always assume that a person is lesser than you just because of the color of their skin.

I think "Damn, not only do they have brains and a work ethic they have the multi cultural thing going too." Secretly I'm feeling deeply jealous on so many levels. Why am I so boring white and mediocre? Hell, all the affirmative action in the world wouldn't get me into an ivy!

I don't mean to get all Sociology 101 in here, but please read http://www.case.edu/president/aaction/UnpackingTheKnapsack.pdf

Any benefits racial/ethnic minorities get from affirmative action are far outweighed by the benefits whites get from white privilege.

The same way the benefits gender minorities (women) get from affirmative action are far outweighed by the benefits of male privilege.

My next door neighbor is a black Ivy League graduate. Many of her friends that visit are also black Ivy League grads. It never occurred to me that any of them benefitted from affirmative action. They may have had help from scholarships or got some other kind of a break, but every one of them has been an impressive individual. I am generally awed by them.

I think attributing a minorities' success to affirmative action is a cop out. And, any minority that actually did benefit from affirmative action should not give a crap what anyone else thinks. Affirmative action may have gotten them in the door. It didn't get them the diploma. They earned that.
