Pretty gym

I need to lift weights on doctor’s orders. I’ve been going to a community rec center three days a week and it’s fine and free but awfully utilitarian. I’m thinking a gym that feels more like an indulgence would be more motivating. I used to belong to Results when I lived downtown but it’s too far from me now. Any recommendations for similar gyms near NWDC, McLean, or Bethesda?

Depends on how much you want to spend. Prettiest gyms will be Equinox and St James in Bethesda. Those will run you over $100/month. New Equinox opens in a month in City Ridge on Wisconsin Ave near Tenleytown.

OneLife Fitness is opening a new huge location next door to City Ridge around January 2024. Will cost $40-50/month.

Mainstream gyms along Wisconsin Ave include Crunch and OneLife Fitness. Those gyms are nothing fancy but will look a lot nicer than your community rec center.

From what I've heard, Equinox. Peasants like me can't afford it there.

OP here and I’m a peasant too. I’d like a clean place with a coffee shop or juice bar, nice bathrooms with good showers and a sauna. I don’t need a spa or personal training. Results was perfect. I’m looking for something between the rec center and Equinox for under $100/month. Crunch?

Thoughts on OneLife Tenleytown versus Crunch? Are they comparable?

I mean, I would not consider these pretty, but you can join the old Tenleytown OneLife and move over when the new one is open sometime next year.

I’m a current member of Equinox Bethesda and planning on moving over to the new Equinox over in Ridge Square next month. I’ll most likely change to OneLife as I find the Equinox trainers and many members annoying.

The new onelife location that's opening in a few months is going to be pretty nice and their basic membership is about $40/month.

OP here and I toured Crunch and OneLife. I think I like my free rec center better. At least there are windows, high ceilings, and it doesn’t smell like feet. I’ll keep looking.

Lifetime in Potomac/Rockville has a feel like this. After I do a hard class then I do a class called Surrender which is all about clearing your head, stretching (it's yin yoga) and blissing out. It's a beautiful facility with a spa, salon, whirlpool, sauna, steamroom (eucalyptus scented). It's pricey but I'm spending a ridiculous amount of time there. There are common areas, too, and they feel like a hotel.

I’d be interested in hearing why annoying at Equinox.

Trainers. They act like they own the place, hog equipment, hide the bands, use their free time when not training to do things like pull-ups in the squat cage, I could go on.

As far as the gym, equipment is broken for months and not fixed, water fountains barely work, the locker rooms need to be updated, and the pool is just sad (two lap lanes only). I found Vida fitness in Navy Yard to be so much better.

Did you check OneLife Bethesda?

No I went to Tenley, which in fairness, is old and closing when the new one at City Ridge opens. Crunch was dark with no windows and it felt like a cave. I didn’t realize how much I care about windows but I do.
