I think I’m having a chemical pregnancy - what do I do?

Anonymous
Got a strong positive test on Thursday. I’m currently theoretically at 4w2d so it’s super super early. I had some spotting yesterday and it’s getting worse today.

1) I assume this is a chemical pregnancy?

2) what do I do? Do I need to see a doctor or do I just treat this like a regular period and try again next month?

I’m so bummed

I’m sorry, OP. What color is the bleeding? Are there clots? It could very well be a chemical pregnancy. If so, I think a regular OBGYN would tell you to wait it out. If you’re seeing a RE, they could monitor your betas and/or give you an ultrasound to see if the bleeding is caused by a subchorionic hematoma or something else.

OP here. No RE. Was some brown spotting (really just a few drops) yesterday, but today it’s redder and a pantyliner is inadequate, I had to switch to a real pad. Not a full period yet though.

Is this worth a call to the midwives?

Yes! Call them. Maybe they tell you there’s nothing to do but there’s no reason not to call.

I regretted telling my OB. It kept coming up in appointments which was annoying and pointless—like you I only knew from testing early.

There's nothing you can do, OP, to prevent losing this pregnancy.

However, I would contact your OB because it could be that you need progesterone supplementation or HCG (it happens, but it's much rarer). What you should do is request a series of HCG and progesterone tests the next time you're pregnant, so your levels can be evaluated.

Nothing you can do but I also don’t think it’s a chemical pregnancy.

OP again. It’s pretty red now and there’s been some (small) clots

I’ve had two live births and this is my first miscarriage. Would you still recommend this?

She thinks it's an early miscarriage.

Hi OP I’ve had one child and two chemical/early miscarriages. The midwives are great and will talk to you about what to do and if you need to see them. Hugs.

Nothing to do, but note it in your mind. Once you get to 2 or 3 or a late loss make sure they test for genetic abnormalities to start the documentation process for recurrent pregnancy loss.

A chemical pregnancy is a very early miscarriage that happens within the first five weeks of pregnancy.

Hi I’ve had a chemical then a miscarriage at 6 weeks and now pregnant again, my ob is not playing around this time and I’ve been on progesterone supplements due to low levels but good hcg. Studies don’t really show that it necessarily helps but it doesn’t hurt. If this one miscarries she says we will need to do genetic testing so it’s good to be proactive and let your OB know.
