MAP scores beyond 6th grade?

Anonymous
My DC dropped significantly in percentile from his end of 5th grade MAP R to 6th grade fall MAP. He went to CES and did well there so I am just baffled by the drop in his score. Does the MAP R count for anything beyond 6th grade? Thanks

6th grade MAP doesn't count for anything. But also the test changes in 6th grade, moving from the MAP 2-5 version to the MAP 6+ version. It is common for there to be a drop in score, although I see you are also worried about a drop in percentile.

8th grade MAP scores are probably the next ones that matter, as they can be considered for high school application programs.

It's because the version of the test changes between 5th and 6th grade.

Don't worry about it, especially if you weren't planning on requesting placement into a different track. If you plan on having him apply to high school magnets, he will have to get high MAP scores. I believe it's one criteria they look at.

Thanks. He dropped from 90th to 75th. Not sure why. No we don’t plan to pursue any magnet programs in high school. I was worried he might be placed in a different reading class based on the drop in score. There is just one reading class right? Everyone does advanced reading?

That is a big drop. Was he reading as much this summer? But no worries, they're not going to change his class. He'd need to have terrible grades last year and abysmal MAP scores to have remedial English, or whatever it's called.

How many points is that?

Notice the huge error ranges on the score reports, as much as +/- 10

Yes he reads a lot which is why this is baffling.

What do you mean by error ranges?

Is there a change in MAP-R test content in 6th grade?

There's a new test in 6th. Kids who typically score high will likely go down by 10-20 points. Look at the percentiles instead of the raw scores.

He did go down significantly in percentile not just scores. He dropped from 90 to 75th. I didn’t expect the scores to go up or his percentile to go up but expected it will hover around the same 88-92th. But this just seems like a huge drop.

Fluke. I would not read anything into a one time drop. MAP is like that. Our 99th percentile child went down like that during covid, same grade but went right back up to 99 the next test.

OP here- my DC did say that they spent 3 reading classes taking the test and that it was extremely boring to sit and take the test for 3 straight days and he rushed towards the end as he didn’t want to continue with it for another day. I don’t know if he is saying that to make himself feel better or if that’s what happened.
